Are Ceylon Tea Plantation Workers Really being Exploited ?

Currently, there is a campaign by a non-governmental organisation against Ceylon Tea by highlighting that tea workers are being exploited on the plantations. Is that really true ? Is that a reason for you to stop sipping Ceylon Tea ? Let’s discuss.

It’s true that Ceylon Tea hasn’t got a long history as Chinese tea. Tea was first grown commercially in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) by the Scottish planter James Taylor in 1867. Eventually Ceylon Tea became one of the finest tasting teas in the world thanks to her overall, well balanced tasting profile with ideal strength, body, aroma and flavour. During this short history, Asia’s Sweetheart (Sri Lanka) had the honour of having highly skilled plantation workers, specially tea pluckers. With no doubt They are the unsung heroes who really contributed for the betterment of “Pure Ceylon Tea”.

1. Contribution from Small Holders

The share of smallholders’ contribution to total tea production in Sri Lanka has gradually increased. It was above 70% during the period 2010-2013 and has continued to increase up to 76%. So the plantation sector is below 30%. Now you know for certain more than 70% of the teas coming out of Sri Lanka is produced with no worker exploitation.

It’s true that most plantation worker houses are not up to the standard. But now the things are changing slowly. Plantation workers have been given houses in the plantation area itself. They have also been provided some land plots to grow vegetables and other food stuff for their own consumption. Some plantation companies have granted small tea plots for plantation families. In this case, the family manages the plot and sells green leaves to the processing factory.

3. Education

Child Development Centres and Schools

Here, Children in the plantation community are provided pre-school education. Even teachers are diploma holders emerged from the plantation community. In addition to that, infants are looks after while their mothers are working at the field.

After pre-school education, plantation children are provided free education up to degree level. Most Primary schools (up to grade 5) are situated within the plantation. Secondary schools are situated in towns.

“Youth from the community have qualified as doctors and lawyers … opportunities for upward mobility are available,” the planters’ association said.

4. Health Care

Health facilities are provided free of charge for all Sri Lankan citizens. No exception for plantation workers as well. A qualified doctor and a mid-wife are employed at every tea estate in Sri Lanka.

After finishing estate works, most men start working at other places like hotels in near by towns to earn an extra income.

Here, I have shown you the good side of the picture. It’s true that the plantation community is facing many difficulties. But the situation is getting better

If you refrain from drinking Ceylon tea thinking that plantation workers are being not treated well, it affects on their potential wage hikes, annual bonus and other welfare activities. Ideally, international buyers and NGOs should help plantation community directly without just complaining governments of tea growing nations like Sri Lanka, India, Kenya, Malawi etc.

HACKLET 121 – Tea Hacks: Four Impressive Technical Innovations for Tea

Since it’s discovery by the Chinese emperor Shen Nong, tea was refreshing the man kind for generations. This 5000 year old drink eventually became the most popular beverage in the world after water. Largest tea producing nations in the world namely China and India are consuming most of their teas with in the country. Therefore tea is not traded around the world as coffee. As a result, tea industry is way behind coffee when it comes to innovations. In fact tea professionals are following coffee innovations. Anyway I would like to bring you 4 interesting technical innovations related to tea. The development of all these 4 items have been done about 4 years ago.

1. Tea Pi

This set us is designed to emulate commercial tea makers costing hundreds of dollars. The heart of the operation is a Raspberry Pi, making this one of the first Linux powered tea makers we’ve ever heard of. An Adafruit PowerSwitch Tail allows the Pi to control a standard tea kettle. The Pi monitors water temperature with a temperature sensor. A simple servo drops a tea basket into the water for brewing. When the time is up, the servo pulls the basket up and the tea is ready to serve. They had also planned to add voice control to his tea creation.

2. ChaiBot.

This device was designed by [Adrian’s] son [Oliver] to combat a common issue. Both father and son would pour cups of tea, then get involved in a project. By the time they came back, they had ink. ChaiBot steeps the tea for a set amount of time, stirring every minute. The mechanics of the project came from an old CD-ROM drive. A PIC16F887 runs the show, ensuring the steep time is accurate, and activating the motor drive. When the tea is done, an ESP8266 sends a push notification to the user’s phone. The project is housed in a wooden case that fits perfectly on the kitchen counter.

3. Eye-O-Tea.

With this gadget, Our tea cup can join the Internet of Things. This equipment essentially is a web connected coaster with temperature monitoring built right in. Temperature is measured with a Melexis thermometer. An Arduino Pro Mini reads the temperature and passes it on to a WiFi module. The entire device is powered by a LiPo battery, and neatly housed in a gutted cup warmer. On the cloud side, we can use ThinkSpeak and freeboard.io to make an interface we can access with the mobile phone. If the tea is too hot, Eye-O-Tea will let us know. It will also send us an SMS if we forgot our cup and it’s going cold.

4. Camper Induction Cooker,

A 2016 Hackaday Prize entry. [Siggi] wanted hot liquids on the go, but he didn’t want to fool around with heating elements. An induction heater was the way to go. A Cypress PSOC micro controls the system. Metal travel style mugs can be used without modification. For ceramic or plastic mugs (Tea With Nipun never recommend plastic mugs since those plastic micro particles can come in to the hot brew), a metal washer (hopefully coated with something food safe) acts as an immersion heater. The project is definitely a bit unwieldy at the moment, but I could see [Siggi’s] idea being incorporated into automotive cup holders. [Siggi] put his project on hold. I hope seeing his work on the front page will get development moving again.

One might argue saying that there is nothing better than a freshly brewed tea pot with loose leaf tea. That’s quite true but technical innovations are also vital for the betterment of any industry. Therefore as tea industry professionals we should have strategies to attract innovative people to the industry. These 4 Innovations are quite interesting, aren’t they ?

Christmas & Tea Philosophy

Christmas day is noble. Jesus Christ is the load who conveyed the message of noble god. Load Jesus taught the value of peace, kindness and humanity to the mankind. By the meantime, Tea is the most popular beverage in the world discovered by the Chinese emperor Shen Nong way back in 2732 B.C. As a Tea passionate, I personally see below similarities between Christmas / Christianity and Tea.

1. Long History

As I said before, tea was discovered in 2732 B.C. It’s true that Tea was discovered way before the noble Jesus Christ’s birth. Who knows his good self may have enjoyed tea. Anyway, both has got a long history.

2. Diversity

A vast range of diverse people practice Christianity. No matter whether they are rich or poor, male or female, black or white, elder or younger, pretty or ugly, noble god bless warm hearted kind people. Diversity of tea is also so high.

If we take different tea types, sensory properties are so different when moving from Dark Pu-erh towards plain, least processed white teas. Particle sizes are ranging from largest grade OPA (Orange Pekoe A) or even whole leaf specialty grades like silver / golden tips to finest grades like Dust and Matcha green tea powder. All these tea types are refreshing and healthy.

3. Popularity

Christianity is the most followed religion / philosophy in the world. Tea is the most popular beverage in the world after water.

4. Philosophy

a. When someone listen to the Noble god’s message his / her mind clams down. L-theanine which is available only in tea calms down our body and mind, simply speaking tea relaxes our souls.

b. Noble god’s message provides us kind of a stimulation as well. Alkaloids like caffeine available in tea stimulates drinker’s soul. Stimulation from tea is more long lasting compared to coffee due to the presence of alkaloids other than caffeine. Tea is the only popular beverage which provides stimulation and relaxation at the same time.

c. Christianity values the generosity a lot. Tea as a beverage donates refreshment, stimulation, relaxation and priceless health benefits like reducing the effect of cardio vascular diseases, cancers, diabetes etc by expecting nothing in return.

There may be some controversial points which you would like to highlight. If so please forgive me since I am not a Christian & kindly point out those while sharing your opinion.

Tea is also a Philosophy and a Religion ! So Let’s Celebrate Christmas While Sipping Our Favourite Cuppa !

CEYLON TEA MUSEUM: Reflects Golden Old Days of Sri Lankan Tea

During the time when Scottish planter Mr. James Taylor initiated commercial tea cultivation in Sri lanka, no body would have thought teas coming from this beautiful island nation, Sri Lanka which is also know as “The Pearl of Indian Ocean, “Asia’s Sweet-Heart”, “The Wonder of Asia” would become this much popular all over the world. Eventually, it became one of the finest tasting teas in the world. All the top brands in the world like Lipton, Twinnings first started tea planting in Sri Lanka. Ceylon Tea Museum is the best place to study the history of Ceylon Tea.

The Ceylon Tea Museum at Hantane, three kilometers from the hill capital of Sri Lanka (Kandy) . This tea museum consists of four floors. The ground floor and the second floor exhibit very old items of machinery and the first floor consist of a library and an auditorium with facilities for audio visual presentations. The third floor is allocated to tea sales outlets, where a selection of Sri Lanka’s finest tea is available. The entire top floor is a tea cafe. A panoramic view of the Kandy city surrounded by beautiful mountain ranges can be viewed through a telescope mounted on the fourth floor.

The grounds surrounding the Tea Museum are landscaped with different varieties of teas. Additionally, its proximity to the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens and Loolecondera estate, where tea was first grown commercially in Sri Lanka.

The library of Ceylon Tea Museum houses a collection of books, periodicals, newspapers, manuscripts, films, maps, prints, documents, CDs, videotapes and DVDs which provide the visitor a deep insight into the History of Ceylon Tea Industry which ranges from latter part of 1800 to the modern day.

Old photographs of tea factories, plantations & planters such as James Taylor, Thomas J Lipton etc. showcase the proud heritage of the Ceylon tea industry.

Directories of planter’s information and books such as “100 years of Ceylon tea” make sense of the tea industry in Sri Lanka.

Tea Café

The entire top floor is a tea cafe. Visitors are able to enjoy the pure pleasure in a cup and feel the fine art of tea tasting at the Tea Tasting Session arranged at the tea cafe.

A documentary of the Ceylon tea industry (history, working factory, & health benefits of tea) runs in a LED panel mounted on the tea cafe area.

The Story Behind California’s Only Tea Farm

Tea consumption is growing in the US due to increasing health awareness while Coffee is recognized as the favorite hot drink. Hawaii islands is well known for her commercial tea cultivation. Other than that there are very few tea farms located in the US mainland. Charleston tea plantation in South Carolina (http://www.charlestonteaplantation.com/) is the largest among all. But now, I am going to provide you some details about half-acre tea farm situated in California where the most passionate tea drinkers are concentrated.

Background

As far as Mike Fritts (The owner) knows, his small plantation of 500 small trees in Concow may be the only commercial tea farm in California. Golden Feather Tea began few years back as just a few plants, and now takes up most of Fritts’ back yard. His plan is to expand to several more acres of land nearby. To make that all happen he plans to take on an investor or apply for a small business loan.

In the meantime, it’s business as usual, harvesting and processing his tea by hand, taking care to keep the quality high-end, and learning more about tea culture and tea people.

Just like wine has well-educated and discerning sippers, Fritts has connected himself with expert tea-lovers. The industry term for his finished product is California wild-crafted artisan tea, and it can sell for $1,000 a pound.

He knows this means his tea will never sell in mainstream stores, which is why he targets high-end restaurants in San Francisco. He has one customer now, which holds reservation-only multi-course meals, which can include specialty tea.

Tea journey

The idea to start a tea farm evolved somewhat out of happenstance. Fritts had worked in horticulture for 35 years, and lived in Paradise for more than 40 years. When he worked at Mendon’s Nursery, owner Jerry Mendon ordered some tea plants.

Tea plants are Camellia sinensis, originally grown in China. Fritts liked the plants. They are fragrant and grow well in the foothills.

It was about this time he found out he had Lyme disease.

That’s when life changed. His health caused him to slow down. Sometimes he’ll feel fine, then for no particular reason, he’ll be down again, without energy.

Fritts had always worked hard, and slowing down was an adjustment.

He found that tending tea plants at his home worked. If he got tired he could go inside and take a nap. The tea energized him. He learned more about tea cultivation and culture, and planted more plants.

Cultivation

Over the past several years he has learned how to best grow the tea plants in his particular climate. He filters the water he uses. Having chemicals in water could alter the flavor of the finished product, he explained. He also allows the native plants to grow in between his tea plants. He’ll knock the weeds down with a weed whacker, but sees the value of the plants to conserve soil moisture.

Harvest

He has also learned how to harvest and process the tea leaves, using ancient techniques. This includes picking only the newest leaves, which keeps the trees small. Normally the trees might grow up to eight feet tall, he said.

The leaves are gathered by hand and allowed to dry for a few days. Next, he’ll light a fire and continue to dry and roll the leaves in a wok.

The plant used for tea is always the same, Camellia sinensis. The processing is what makes the tea a green, black, white or oolong.

His method of producing tea ends with a tea that is closet to oolong, he said.

The leaves are allowed to wilt to a certain point and then rolled to release the tannins, he said.

So far, people have said they really like his tea, although Fritts said he still has a lot to learn.

He’s also experimenting with virgin tea blossoms. He harvests the blossoms before they fall and before the bees have a chance to steal the nectar. The result is a subtle tea with a sweet nectar aftertaste.

Presentation

Just as there are elegant protocols for serving wine, there are several rituals for serving tea. A gong fu tea ceremony involves exact steps to bring out the most of the flavors in tea. His long-term plans include having a specialty tea tasting room and share some of this ritual with others.

His intention is to produce tea in “an ancient way,” that includes having his heart involved as he grows and harvest the leave. “I know it produces a quality you can’t get from using a machine,” he said.

Here I am referring to Black, Green, Oolong, White etc teas manufactured from the plant Camellia sinensis. Tisanes (Herbal infusions ) such as Chamomile, Rooibos, Yerba mate etc are out from the equation.

Have you ever thought reasons or the secret behind the success story of this noble drink ? I my opinion there are quite a few. As we all know tea refreshes us. Not only the body, but also our souls.

Ozone Friendly Pure Ceylon Tea

Pure Ceylon tea is one of the most renowned generic tea brands which has got more than 150 years of history. Due to it’s well balanced tasting profile and ethical back-ground, Ceylon tea has been able to penetrate to each and every corn in the world during this short period of time. Ozone friendly status for pure Ceylon tea is one of the greatest achievements in the recent past.

Ozone is a gas, a special type of oxygen molecule made up of three atoms instead of two. The ozone layer, high up in Earth’s atmosphere, contains large amounts of this gas, which acts as a barrier to ultraviolet (UV) light and other forms of high-energy radiation reaching Earth’s surface from the Sun and elsewhere.

Alarmed by warnings from the scientists, the world’s nations met in Montreal, Canada in 1987 to decide upon action to protect this layer. Out of this meeting came the Montreal Protocol, signed by 191 countries including Sri Lanka. Under the protocol, methyl bromide use by the Sri Lankan tea industry was progressively reduced, then done away with altogether. As a result of such prompt and effective action by the tea industry and others, Sri Lanka was acclaimed a ‘leader in ozone-layer protection’, receiving the Montreal Protocol Implementers Award in 2007.

All tea grown in Sri Lanka is now one hundred percent ozone-friendly. This is a distinction of which no other tea-producing nation can boast. Plans are now being drawn up to impose a total ban on methyl bromide use in applications like export packaging and shipping. As of May 2011, all Ceylon Tea is entitled to bear the new ‘Ozone Friendly Pure Ceylon Tea’ logo, certifying that it has been produced without the use of any ozone-depleting substances.

Ceylon Tea cultivated and manufactured in the territory of Sri Lanka without the use of Methyl Bromide (MeBr) or any other Ozone Depletion Substances is the world’s first to achieve the “Ozone Friendly Tea” recognition under the Montréal Protocol Treaty and is registered as a Certification Mark by Sri Lanka Tea Board. MeBr is used as a nematicide. This releases Bromine gas which harms the layer. This chemical has been banned to use for commercial tea cultivation in Sri Lanka. Few years back it was allowed to use for soil fumigation at tea nurseries. In the later part of 2010, I had the opportunity practice this soil fumigation activity at Glen Alpin estate, Uva region, Sri Lanka as a part of my creeper training. But currently, MeBr is not allowed for any field activity.

Mental wounds can be healed with tea beverage

Tea is a beverage which has got more than 5000 years of history. Since it’s discover by the Chinese emperor Shen Nong, this wonderful beverage has become the most popular beverage after water. As a beverage tea has got many specific features responsible for her great popularity all over the world. Let’s discuss those feature with another post. “When I was in my early 20s, I found myself effectively homeless. I was struggling to carve out a space for myself as a young freelance journalist in London and for various reasons no longer felt welcome in our family home.

Mary Carson, a warm Irish Catholic journalist for whom I was working at the time, took me under her wing. She called me Amrani, in her Irish intonation, and I called her Carson in return. She saw I was floundering and invited me to stay with her. Her house was already quite full with three lively kids, but she made space for me in such a selfless way that I will for ever be in her debt.

While I was staying at her house, Carson or her partner, Andy, would put the kettle on as soon as they heard the front door slam. In those days there were tough moments, but Carson could heal any wounds with cups of tea. Bad day in the office? Put the kettle on. Feeling a bit shit generally? Crack out the biscuits.

Making a cup of tea is a small act of kindness. It’s quietly touching when someone knows just how you take it; it feels warm in your hands and tastes like home.

I can’t count the hours we spent nursing mugs of tea while sharing tales about our lives. Carson grew up during the Troubles and has seen a lot. She would recount stories of her life in Derry, and we would lose ourselves discussing faith, race and violence. Her perspective was different from that of everyone else I knew, and even though we are of different generations and from different backgrounds, there was mutual respect and common ground.

Things are a lot better now, but I still regularly pop over to Carson’s for a brew. Whether it’s breakfast, afternoon or dinnertime, I love to be curled up on the sofa with her and a cuppa. It’s where I feel most safe”.

Above is regarding mental wounds. Then what about physical wounds. Tea is a beverage which is a rich source of valuable antioxidants. Antioxidants present in tea controls bad odors coming out of wounds by minimizing oxidation. An animal based study has claimed that wounds dressed with the extract had less scar width when compared to the control (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3705756/).
