Ceylon Tea Enlightened Hong Kong Tea Fair

Ceylon Tea coming from the resplendent island nation, Sri Lanka is recognized for her well balanced tasting profile by tea connoisseurs all over the globe. As Sri Lanka Tea Board had reported, Hong Kong Tea Fair 2019 Trade Exhibition was held at Hong Kong International and conventional Centre from 15th to 17th August 2019. Sri Lanka Tea Board Group Stand had occupied 10 booths in this year.

By the mean time, Strathdon Ceylon tea factory’s BP1 (Broken Pekoe) grade introduced by Origin Tea Exports (Pvt) Ltd won the award for The Best CTC Black Tea at The Tea Competition held parallel to the fair.

Hong Kong is a very diverse market for tea. From one end, traditional Chinese Green (Dragon Well, Maojiang, Matcha, Bi Luo Chun) , Black (Keemun, Yunnan Gold, Pu-Erh), Oolong (Iron Goddess of Mercy, Milk Oolong, Ginseng Oolong) and White teas (Silver needle, Bai Mu Tan) are popular among traditional and health conscious tea lovers. From the other end, Hong Kong style milk tea is very popular among all the generations due to the British influence they had till 1997. Hong Kong style milk tea is made with Black Tea and Evaporated condensed milk imported from Malaysia. Tea base is mainly Black tea dust, BOPF and BOP which are smaller orthodox rotorvane black teas. Nowadays CTC (Crush / Tear / Curl) grades like BP1 (Broken Pekoe), PF1(Pekoe Fannings) and PF are also used as the tea base.

While I was working with our Hong Kong partner based in Southern China, I used to make Hong Kong style milk tea by adding 6-10g of tea, 56g (2 ounce) of evaporated condensed milk and 10g of sugar per cup. Brits also had a strong cup of tea prior to World War II. But due to economic down fall they had during the world war II, Brits used to add lower amount of tea (about 2g per cup). Since Hong Kong was not affected too much, they continued to have a stronger tea. Fresh milk was not readily available in both China and Hong Kong few decades back. This may be why they have used to add evaporated condensed milk which is not a healthy option at all.
