‘Ceylon Tea’ Promoted in Australia As An Immune Booster to Fight COVID-19 Pandemic
Tea was first grown commercially in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) by the Scottish planter James Taylor in 1867. Eventually Ceylon Tea became one of the finest tasting teas in the world thanks to her overall, well balanced tasting profile with ideal strength, body, aroma and flavour. Tea lovers from all over the globe grabbed Ceylon Tea with both hands. By the meantime, As Colombo Times had reported, Ceylon Tea was promoted in Australia as an immune booster to minimize the effect or prevent from COVID-19 pandemic. This was highlighted during a well-attended ‘Virtual Ceylon Tea Evening’ organized by the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Melbourne, in association with the Sri Lanka Tea Board, on 21 October 2020.
The ‘Virtual Ceylon Tea Evening’ was a novel concept to promote ‘Ceylon Tea’ during this tricky time. Among 40+ participants of this online event, there were members from the Australian federal parliament, Parliament of the State of Victoria, Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Sri Lanka-Australia Chamber of Commerce, Aus-Lanka Business Council, Australia-Sri Lanka Council Inc, Consular Corps of Victoria, and hoteliers in Melbourne.
The Chairman of Sri Lanka Tea Board Mr. Jayantha Molligoda, joining from Colombo admired the Aussie consumer for their continued desire for Ceylon tea and said the “Ceylon Tea Global Promotional Campaign” commencing in 2021 will cover Australian market, to bring the Australian consumer closer with Ceylon Tea. Mr. Dilhan Fernando, CEO of Dilmah demonstrated tasting of different Ceylon regional teas and making of a proper cup of tea.
Ms. Sharyn Johnston, The Founder of Australian Tea Masters, Ceylon tea lover Ms. Manuela Erb and Foodbank Victoria Food Procurement Manager Mr. Sunil Lakshmanasinghe were among the other panelists from Australia. The high quality of Pure Ceylon tea, health benefits of drinking tea especially during COVID 19 pandemic, tea’s ability to act as an immune booster, antioxidant qualities and ability to minimize the stress hormone cortisol in the body were pointed out by the panellists. Earlier this year, the Foodbank Victoria distributed the gift Ceylon tea consignment from the President of Sri Lanka for the victims of the Australian bushfires.
Australia is a key market for Ceylon tea. Sri Lanka was the second largest tea exporter to Australia in 2018 with 2391 metric tons of tea; 12% of Sri Lanka’s exports to Australia in that year. In 2019, Sri Lanka exported over US$ 25 million worth of tea to Australia.
