Heaviest Tea Drinking Nation’s Exports Hiked 52% in First Nine Months
Tea is a way of life in Turkey and this wonderful tea drinking nation has got the highest per capita tea consumption in the world which is around 7 pounds per person per year. As Daily SABAH had reported, Turkish tea exports has reached $10.8 million to 103 countries in the first nine months of 2019, according to the Eastern Black Sea Exporters Association (DKİB). The $10.8 million worth tea exports was generated from 3,088 tons of tea exports
Turkey exported 2,035 tons of tea during the same period of last year, amounting to $8.3 million in revenue. Thus, tea exports climbed 52% in quantity and 30% in revenue compared to the same period of last year.
Belgium was the No 1 importer with USD 4.5 million, followed by Germany with USD 1.5 million and the Northern Cyprus with USD 1 million.
From January-September 2019, 2,170 tons of tea was exported from the Eastern Black Sea region to 23 countries, generating $6.2 million in return.
Şaban Turgut, deputy chairman of DKİIB and chairman of the Tea Sector Committee, mentioned “Turkey’s diversity in tea exports is growing every year. Turkey’s state-owned tea company, ÇAYKUR’s participation in international food fairs was instrumental in expanding Turkish tea’s presence in overseas markets”.
Turkey is also a trading hub for tea. They import teas from Sri Lanka (Ceylon) , India and Africa and then blend & Re-export to surrounding nations.
Most Turkish consumers enjoy tea in extreme hot form which has led to some oral cancers among drinkers. Also they add quite a lot of sugar in to their tea. But overall Turkish people are so passionate on tea and serving tea is an important feature of kind Turkish hospitality.
