Indian Railways To Sell Tea In Eco-Friendly Kulhad Instead Of Plastic Cup
Tea was first discovered by the Chinese emperor Shen Nong way back in 2732 B.C. But Assam region in India is also considered as an origin of tea based on historic evidences. Tea is native to India & It is not only a drink, it’s a way of life in India. Darjeeling first flush & Assam Orthodox teas are always a treat to sip with no additives. By the way, Indian CTC teas as well as Orthodox-rotorvane teas go very well with milk. This piece of news is also about serving milk tea. As Curlytales had reported, On November 29, 2020, Union Railway Minister Hon. Piyush Goyal stated that 400 railway stations in India already serve tea in kulhad clay cups. The minister revealed that the government plan to implement the same all over India to make the nation plastic-free. Mr. Goyal further mentioned that the government is planning to implement the same across the nation as part of the Indian Railways contribution in making India plastic-free. Most importantly this will also generate employment.
Former Railway Minister, Hon. Lalu Prasad Yadav is the one who first introduced kulhads in railway stations in 2004. Mr. Yadav implemented this to provide mass employment to kulhad makers. But unfortunately over the years kulhads were replaced by plastic cups. The high cost of kulhads compared to cheaper plastic cups was the main reason. There was also a short supply of kulhads.
In 2019, Hon. Nitin Gadkari, Road Transport Minister, wrote to Hon. Piyush Goyal to make kulhads compulsory in 100 railway stations. Mr. Gadkari also suggested that state transport undertakings and airports which have tea stalls can use the kulhad instead of plastic cups to serve chai to tea lovers.
“Tea with Nipun” hopes that Indian government will soon implement this great initiative. Plastics cups not only pollutes the environment, Those also add harmful plastic particles to hot tea brew. Therefore having tea in plastic cups is not a healthy option at all. Also milk tea tastes much better when sipping with Kulhad.
