International Tea Day (May 21) Sofa Summit: Live on YouTube!

Since it’s discovery by the Chinese emperor Shen Nong way back in 2732 BC, tea was refreshing the man kind for generations. This 5000 year old drink eventually became the most popular beverage in the world after water due to many functional and health benefits. In a time when the whole world is battling hard against COVID 19 epidemic, as Tea & Herbal Association of Canada had reported, International Tea Day (21 May) Sofa Summit is going Live on YouTube on 21st of May 2020.

Early this year, The United Nations General Assembly passed resolution 74/241 declaring May 21st  ‘INTERNATIONAL TEA DAY‘. Their mission is to elevate tea to be celebrated around the globe. The resolution acknowledges the “… urgent need to raise public awareness of the importance of tea for rural development and sustainable livelihoods and to improve the tea value chain to contribute to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.”

The conference was jointly hosted by the Central Trade Unions of India with the Institute of Social Development (ISD) in Kandy, Sri Lanka and supported by many non-governmental organizations. International Tea Day was celebrated earlier on 15 December. Over time the Dec. 15 celebrations evolved to promote holiday blends, seasonal drink recipes, and retail gifting opportunities. In brief, the event became more about profits and packaging than those who made the tea within.

The Schedule is as follows,

I am quite certain that many tea lovers from all over the world will join this Sofa summit. It’s glad to see speakers from producing nations like China, India, Kenya, Korea and Argentina. It’s quite sad not tea speakers from Sri Lanka where Ceylon Teas are coming from. Also there should be some place for Japanese tea as well. But overall, hats off to organizers for arranging such a useful sofa summit on behalf of tea enthusiasts around the globe.
