Tea is a way of life in Japan. Japanese tea ceremony is very well organized and a meaningful event. Japanese Matcha, Gyokuro, Sencha, Houjicha etc are always a treat to sip. Surprisingly, Japan is also the No 1 Ready to Drink (RTD) tea market in the world. Convenience factor plays a vital role in modern day marketing. No exception in Japan as well. Maintaining the originality of tea is in deed a challenge when catering convenience conscious consumers. As Japan Today had reported, Coca-Cola Japan has already introduced “1,2, Cube” series, which allows consumers to drop a freeze dried cube into the cup to have an instant brew of green tea, coffee and barley.

This product line is a response to a survey conducted by Coca-Cola Japan among its customers, which revealed that a majority of those surveyed longed to drink brewed tea and coffee after pandemic conditions lightened, and discovered that brewing their own at home was inconvenient. Many who responded also mentioned that they had switched to using their own personal mug or bottle when out, citing environmental awareness.

These cubes are available in three different brews namely green tea, barley and coffee) which can be prepared by simply dropping a dissolvable freeze-dried cube into cold or hot water. Coca-Cola says the freeze drying technique concentrates the original aroma and flavour of tea leaves into the cube for a flavourful brew which is ideal to pack for excursions or simply enjoy at home with less washing involved.

This launch is also part of an SDG-based initiative by Coca Cola, featuring paper bags and no individual packaging for the cubes, in an effort to minimize plastic waste issues caused by other instant teas.

All three types are now available exclusively on Amazon. According to the description, green tea extract is the main ingredient in this product. So the originality is up to a question. A cube made from Japanese Matcha green tea powder would be a better option.
