Tea was first grown commercially in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) by the Scottish planter James Taylor in 1867. Eventually Ceylon Tea became one of the finest tasting teas in the world thanks to her overall, well balanced tasting profile with ideal strength, body, aroma and flavour. By the way, Embassy of Sri Lanka in UAE had made arrangements with the guidance of His Excellency Malraj de Silva, the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the United Arab Emirates to distribute the world renowned Pure Ceylon Tea to health staff in the UAE as a gesture of goodwill in appreciation of the great care extended by UAE towards the welfare of Sri Lankan expatriates during the unprecedented pandemic. The first series of events were held in Ras Al Khaimah where Ceylon Tea was gifted to Hospital & Medical University in Ras Al Khaimah and as well as to Saqr Hospital.

The Sri Lanka Tea Board and six leading Sri Lankan Tea exporting firms, contributed towards this initiative. A symbolic package of assortment of Ceylon Teas was presented to Mr. Mohammed Bin Rashid, the Director of Saqr hospital and a donation of Ceylon Tea was also given to the management to distribute among the medical and health care staff.

The Ambassador was accompanied by Mr. Nalinda Wijerathna, Sri Lanka Consul General in Dubai and the Northern Emirates, Premala Srikantha, Minister (Tea Promotion) for MENA Region, and Mohamed Rizvi, Head of Chancery of the Embassy. Mr. Sampath Perera, Head of Corporate and Commercial Banking of RAK BANK and Mr. Suren Swaminathan, Chairman of Sri Lanka Business Council in Dubai also attended representing the business sector.

A high tea event was also held at Ras Al Khaimah hospital. All seven regional specialty Ceylon Teas (Kandy, Dimbulla, Nuwara-Eliya, Uda Pussellawa, Uva, Sabaragamuwa and Ruhuna) were presented with Ceylon Tea packs.
