Sri Lanka Promotes Organic / Bio Fertilizer for Tea Cultivation
Tea is a way of life in Sri Lanka, even though tea plant is not native to this beautiful island. Tea was first grown commercially in Ceylon (Colonial Sri Lanka) by the Scottish planter Mr. James Tayler in 1867. Since then Ceylon Tea was emerged as one of the finest tasting teas in the world. Although Sri Lanka is a small island, the diversity of tea is quite amazing. One might enjoy a light, fragrant Nuwara-Eliya tea, while another is sipping a full bodied Ruhuna Tea. According to a claim made by the ISO few years back, Ceylon Tea is the cleanest tea in the world considering pesticide residues. Ceylon tea cultivation can’t simply called as conventional. It’s an integrated cultivation system with a mix of conventional and organic farming techniques. Here the last option is chemical control, only if natural, traditional methods didn’t work. In order to bring Ceylon Tea much closer to organic, The Tea Commissioner of Sri Lanka Tea Board has started to promote organic fertilizer (manure) by registering bio fertilizer manufacturers.
This initiative will make Ceylon Tea cleaner and safer to sip.
