Ceylon Tea is recognized as one of the finest tasting teas in the world Thanks to her well balanced tasting profile with ideal strength, body, flavour and taste for a perfect cuppa. Tea was the 4th largest contributor to Sri Lankan economy before pandemic. Tourism was the 3rd, but currently Tourism and the people who depended on it have been affected by COVID 19 pandemic situation. There are so many criticisms on bringing down tourists to Sri Lanka during pandemic. By the meantime, As Daily FT had reported, after long discussions, negotiations, debates and deliberations with different stakeholders, when the first two tourist flights landed Sri Lankan soil after having shutdown for nearly a year due to the COVID 19 outbreak worldwide. 

Authorities @ The Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport had to make a great effort to welcome these tourists in compliance with operational formalities at the airport with special emphasis on COVID-related health formalities. By the mean time, Sri Lanka Tea Board Staff also made arrangements to welcome Ukrainian tourists with a cup of Ceylon Tea including traditional sweets such as bibikkam, kalu dodol and savouries along with the Ceylon Tea. The Ceylon Dimbulla tea was freshly brewed and served to Ukrainian guests by Sri Lankan Catering. During the event, the visitors were briefed on the history of Ceylon Tea, seven regional tea varieties, the special taste and health benefits of tea.

Unlike China and Japan, Sri Lanka does not have a tea ceremony of her own. Hence, the Sri Lanka Tea Board launched this concept in 2013, namely, a unique Ceylon tea ‘ceremony’ for Ceylon Tea with customs in brewing and serving tea among distinguished visitors.

The Ceylon Tea ceremony concept was based on the Sri Lankan hospitality within a setting of a king of Sri Lanka welcoming his noble audience of visitors and summoning the ladies of the court to proceed with serving the guests the finest Ceylon Tea and refreshments. The tea is served by damsels dressed in traditional ancient attire of a royal palace.

By showing respect to the beverage, the Ceylon Tea was ceremonially brought and served in a ‘pan kendiya’ accompanied with ‘manel’ (Blue water Lily) flowers and incense sticks which were all synonymous with Sri Lankan traditions.

Sri Lanka Tea Board is the semi-government organization which regulates the quality of Ceylon Tea and most importantly, this reputed body is responsible for promoting Ceylon tea worldwide. As Sri Lanka Tea Board had reported, The Ceylon black Tea promotion campaign kicked off this December, with a Rs.35 million (USD 0.18 million) investment aimed at promoting “Ceylon Tea – The World Favorite Tea” though social media.

Sri Lanka Tea Board (SLTB) Director Promotion Ms. Pavithri Peiris mentioned, the promotion campaign would be conducted through the social media platforms in countries such as Russia, Ukraine, Japan, China, Germany, USA, Chile, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and Iran and the campaign is rolled out from December 2020 to March 2020 for three months period in each market.

Because of COVID-19 pandemic, all promotions have been confined to digital platforms methods to penetrate in to the markets and common platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Intragram, Youtube, LinkedIn and indigenous platforms like Vkontakte (Russia), Baidu, Wechat, Sina Weibo, Xiaohongshu (China) and Facenama, Aparat (Iran) are selected to this campaign.

Sri Lanka Tea Board has approved 3 digital videos and 12 short video clips for the initial exercise for three months time. The progress will be evaluated on monthly basis.  

A proposal approved by the Promotional and Marketing Committee as well as the Director Board of Sri Lanka Tea Board to launch a short term promotional campaign during the pandemic period with a view to rebuild / uplift the brand image of “Ceylon Tea”. The funds required for the campaign have been sourced from the Promotion & Marketing Levy established under Sri Lanka Tea Board. MullenLowe Sri Lanka, a leading advertising agency with international network was selected under the Government tender procedure and entrusted to handle the Black Tea Campaign.

The Chairman added further, “The policy of the Sri Lanka tea industry is to encourage value addition. However, the share of Ceylon Tea exports representing the consumer packs segment up to 03Kgs has been stagnating around 40% for the past several decades. Therefore, promoting the export of branded consumer packs from Sri Lanka is the way forward to achieve this goal. Whilst strengthening the “Nation Brand Visibility” for Ceylon Tea, providing support to the Sri Lankan own brands to reinforce themselves solidly in the consumer markets will be a prime goal,”.

The positive trend that needs to be properly understood is the underlining fact that tea consumption is not declining but it’s changing, Chairman said.
Time is opportune to promote ‘Ceylon Tea’ based on its unique selling propositions (USPs) going beyond ‘country of origin’, such as the sustainability credentials, traceability of the supply chain, wellness factors, rich heritage and premium price of Ceylon Tea. Further, the ample opportunities for employment creation by the tea industry will also support the global marketing effort under the inclusive growth model of our tea industry.

A revitalization of the image of Ceylon Tea and vigorous promotion of Sri Lanka owned brands through a Business to Business (B to B) and Business to Consumer (B to C) Global Promotion Campaign appears to be the need of the hour, Mr. Molligoda said. Although tea consuming countries are badly affected due to the COVID 19 outbreak, it is expected that our exporters in Sri Lanka may be able to secure orders due to the above positive features associated with the Ceylon Tea. “Ceylon Tea could fetch higher prices compared to teas from other producing countries based on the above sustainable credentials, although the cost structure and productivity levels are totally disproportionate to make the industry viable, especially the producers in the short term. Thus, a strong brand promotional incentive scheme is concurrently lined up for 2021-22”, he remarked.
