These rooftop tea gardens in Hangzhou is indeed a great concept

China is recognized as the “Birth place of tea”. Chinese love their cuppa and they are so passionate on their favourite beverage, “Tea”. Tea is a way of life in China. Even a lifetime is not enough to complete studying on Chinese tea. There are different tasting profiles from very melow silver needle white tea to strong dark pu-erh. Sizes are also ranging from fine matcha powder to few inches long Taiping Hou kui. Lush green Chinese tea fields are so pleasant to view. But growing tea on rooftops is indeed an interesting concept. As People’s Daily Online had reported, In Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province in Eastern China, the rooftops of 11 high-rise buildings within a commercial and art complex have been transformed into vibrant tea gardens. These gardens have become a popular destination, attracting many visitors during the tea harvesting season.

Covering a total area of approximately 6,000 square meters, the rooftop tea gardens feature West Lake’s famous Longjing tea, a variety of green tea grown in Hangzhou. West Lake Longjing is also recognized as the No 1 in China. In addition to this, Matcha tea powder coming from Hangzhou is also quite popular among tea lovers. Hangzhou’s high-rise tea gardens give visitors the joy of viewing the breathtaking city skyline while experiencing tea harvesting.

In addition to creating a picturesque urban scenery, the rooftop tea gardens also offer practical benefits such as providing shade during the hot summer months, which helps reduce the energy consumption and carbon emissions of the buildings below.

This particular complex has become a model project for other rooftop greening initiatives in Hangzhou, blending urban tourism with traditional tea culture.

Sri Lanka Shipped A Record 11.8 Million Kgs of Tea to China in 2019

China is the birthplace of tea. This wonderful beverage is a way of life in this part of the world since it’s discovery way back in 2732 BC by the Chinese Emperor Shen Nong. Chinese people know exactly how to appreciate good teas. Ceylon Tea coming from the resplendent island nation Sri Lanka is also recognized as one of the finest tasting teas in the world. As Colombo Gazette had reported, Sri Lanka shipped a highest ever 11.8 Million Kgs of Ceylon tea to China in 2019, Asia Siyaka Commodities PLC said yesterday.

Five years ago the quantity was less than half at 5.3Mn Kg. There has been steady quantity growth year on year but in 2019 85% of tea shipped was in bulk form. China imported a total of 35mnkg in 2018 and Sri Lanka had a 29% share with shipments of 10MnKg, Asia Siyaka said. But in 2019, Sri Lanka lost the pride of being the largest tea exporter to China. India overtook Sri Lanka in 2019.

Overall, it said that major tea producer and exporter countries Sri Lanka, Kenya and India were all in trouble in the year 2019, with tea growers desperately seeking Government assistance to survive another year.

Based on available information, research suggests that in Sri Lanka, India and Kenya tea producers both farmers and companies were making losses due to declined prices. This situation has in fact been building up from end 2017 and has its roots in the El Nino drought in 2016. The tea broker notes with deep concern new predictions of an El Nino in 2020.

Volatile local and regional political problems and declined crude oil prices have impacted demand in Sri Lanka in particular, as the nation relies on North Africa and the Middle East for 52% of its exports.  Meanwhile, world tea trade has largely been stagnant over the past 5 years.

Tea was not among the $200 billion in Chinese imports subject to a 10% US tariff

China is the origin of tea which has got more than 5000 years of history. Tea was not among the $200 billion in Chinese imports subject to a 10% US tariff announced. In response, China canceled scheduled trade talks. The escalation in the trade war between the two countries added to tariffs on $50 billion in goods imposed this summer. Chinese authorities responded with a $60 billion counter punch in retaliation.

Tea Association of the USA president Peter Goggi says “tariffs on tea are highly unlikely.”

“The tea growing industry in the US is not yet large enough to warrant tariff protection,” Goggi explains. “While progress has been made and tea is being grown around the US, most of the production sites in the U.S. are small and artisanal in nature and are not in any position to replace the volume of Chinese tea in our markets.”

China exports 724,634,383 pounds of tea annually, of which 42,744,989 comes to the US. This means that in percentage terms, the US’ apparent consumption of Chinese tea is 5.9% of their exports and only 0.825% of production, said Goggi.

“The tea industry is vanishingly small by the standards of both countries’ economies and thus very little impact could be produced by including tea in the tariff scheme, and so we hope that tea may escape the notice of the competing interests due to its diminutive stature on the economic stage,” says Aaron Vick, senior tea buyer at the The G.S. Haly Co., in Redwood City, Calif.

The US maintains that China is expanding its economy unfairly by forcing US companies to hand over technology to gain access to the Chinese market. Unless China concedes, US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on all Chinese imports, to offset a trade deficit which grew to $336 billion in 2017.“

Any tariff imposed on Chinese tea would not be protective, but rather, a transparently punitive attack on a culturally iconic product that embodies Chinese national pride,” said Vick.
