A Ceylon Tea Stall Set Up to Promote ‘Ceylon Green Tea’ in Australia

Ceylon Tea coming from the resplendent island nation, Sri Lanka is recognized for her well balanced tasting profile by tea connoisseurs all over the globe. Meantime, following Portuguese princess Catherine’s introduction of tea in 1660 AD, this wonderful beverage eventually became UK’s favorite drint. Ultimately, tea had the honour of being the national beverage in England. With no doubt, tea provided the refreshment, stimulation, relaxation and good health for Brits to build up a massive empire. Sri Lanka Tea Board is the government body which is responsible for international promotion of Pure Ceylon Tea. As Sri Lanka Tea Board had published, A Ceylon Tea stall was set up to promote ‘Ceylon Green Tea’ given the increasing demand of Australians for sustainable, nutrient rich and a healthy drink. This event had been organized by Australia Sri Lanka Parliamentary Friendship Group on 19th June 2023 in Canberra.

The Sri Lanka Tea Board sponsored ‘Ceylon Green Tea Stall on , while ‘Dilmah’, a prominent Ceylon Tea exporter in the Australian market provided gift tea (flavoured green tea) to the invitees. Ceylon tea promotion videos depicting ‘sustainable-grown’ variety of Ceylon tea for the world market were screened at the reception. The event was held alongside a live demonstration on ‘Ceylon Green Tea Tasting Session’ by the staff of the Mission.

It’s not certain how effective the Ceylon green tea promotion will be in these key markets. Sri Lanka is well known and recognized for it’s unique, tasty and high quality black tea. But if Sri Lanka is going to promote green teas, responsible officers have to find ways and means to differentiate from Japanese and Chinese green teas. Japanese and some of the top green teas in China are much more superior than Ceylons while China and Vietnam produces much cheaper green teas to the mass market.

Black, Oolong, Green and White Tea: What’s the Difference? (video)

Tea is the second most popular beverage in the world after water. All Black, Oolong, Green and White Teas are coming from the same plant. So what makes those tea types different even though all of them are descending from the same source ? By providing an answer, American Chemistry Society (https://www.acs.org/content/acs/en.html) has released a video in order to educate consumers.

Tea is a rich source of antioxidants which are polyphenols in nature. Catechins are the main form of poly-phenols present in tea green leaves. During Black tea processing, these catechins are converted naturally in to theaflavins (A Poly-phenol) and a part of theaflavins (A Poly-phenol) are further oxidized in to Thearubigins. Poly-phenol oxidase (PPO) is the enzyme responsible for this reaction. This reaction initiates once the leaf is twisted or broken at rolling process. You must have observed the colour change of apple (In to a brown colour) once it cuts in to pieces and keep for a while. Yes, this is the same reaction.

During Green Tea manufacture, the action of PPO is restricted by denaturing the enzyme with heat. Oolong tea is partially oxidized. White teas like Silver tips are manufactured with apical terminal bud. There is hardly any rolling for white tea. So no fermentation occurs. The white colour comes from the pubescence present under the leaf.

Most important thing is nothing added artificially during any of above tea manufacture. Therefore no matter whether it’s Black, Oolong, Green or White tea. Enjoy your humble cuppa. Cheers !

Jing Tea’s Single Origin Organic Matcha: Best Tasting in The Europe ?

Matcha green tea powder has already become a trending product in the Western world. Also this is the only green tea which goes well with milk. Since this is a fine powder almost all the tea can be consumed. So it has got few times more antioxidants than regular green tea. A New Green Tea Factory from Rwanda

African nations like Kenya, Burundi, Malawi & Rwanda are well known for their coloury, strong CTC Black teas. But in the recent past, these nations have started to change their focus towards Orthodox teas, purple tea etc in order to improve profitability. Sorwathe (https://www.teaimporters.com/sorwathe/), one of the oldest tea companies in Rwanda on Friday unveiled a new green tea factory worth over Rwf1 billion in Kinihira sector, Rulindo district in the Northern Province. According to company officials, the factory will exclusively produce green tea whose demand has globally been increasing over the years.

With the new plant, Peiris indicated that the more than 40-year old family-owned business will now be able to supply tea that buyers want and satisfy the current demand.

The head of the company also highlighted that expanding their operations will give them a competitive edge in green tea business in Rwanda and in the region.

The new factory has a capacity to produce more than 300,000 kilogrammes of organic tea.

During the commissioning of the plant, officials said that more employment opportunities will be provided to the farmers and other community members, and in particular women.

The factory was commissioned at a mega ceremony that brought together hundreds of tea farmers and citizens in Kinihira village as well as high ranking officials in the country.

Some people had a chance to tour the new factory and get a taste of the green tea that Sorwathe will be producing.

This kind of tea produces more pronounced, robust, and clearer flavours and aromas than their traditionally produced counterparts. It is this that many argue is attracting more people to the tea.

According to the Food and Agricultural Organisation, global output of green tea is foreseen to increase at an even faster rate of 7.5 percent annually to reach 3.6 million tonnes in 2027, largely driven by countries like China, India and a few emerging countries.

They anticipate that the production capacity of the new plant could help the company fetch about $1.2 million as the cost of the kilogramme of green tea is expected to be around $4 (about Rwf3,498.6).

The company already produces other varieties of teas, including orthodox (whole leaf tea), white tea, and black teas. It exports to the United States (US), United Kingdom (UK), Canada, Ireland, South Africa, Japan, China, Pakistan and France.

Over the years the production of Sorwathe has increased and currently is around 3.5 million kilogrammes made tea per annum. This is around 15 per cent of the country’s total production and continues to be the largest producer in the country.

Andrew Wertheim, the Chairman of Sorwathe, said their vision is to become the most innovative company in producing orthodox tea, tea bags and packaged tea for retail sale.

“When my father, Joe Werthiem, started Sorwathe in 1975, his vision was to improve the lives of people in surrounding communities through tea. To achieve this goal, we want Sorwathe to be the most innovative tea factory in Rwanda,” he remarked.
