These rooftop tea gardens in Hangzhou is indeed a great concept

China is recognized as the “Birth place of tea”. Chinese love their cuppa and they are so passionate on their favourite beverage, “Tea”. Tea is a way of life in China. Even a lifetime is not enough to complete studying on Chinese tea. There are different tasting profiles from very melow silver needle white tea to strong dark pu-erh. Sizes are also ranging from fine matcha powder to few inches long Taiping Hou kui. Lush green Chinese tea fields are so pleasant to view. But growing tea on rooftops is indeed an interesting concept. As People’s Daily Online had reported, In Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province in Eastern China, the rooftops of 11 high-rise buildings within a commercial and art complex have been transformed into vibrant tea gardens. These gardens have become a popular destination, attracting many visitors during the tea harvesting season.

Covering a total area of approximately 6,000 square meters, the rooftop tea gardens feature West Lake’s famous Longjing tea, a variety of green tea grown in Hangzhou. West Lake Longjing is also recognized as the No 1 in China. In addition to this, Matcha tea powder coming from Hangzhou is also quite popular among tea lovers. Hangzhou’s high-rise tea gardens give visitors the joy of viewing the breathtaking city skyline while experiencing tea harvesting.

In addition to creating a picturesque urban scenery, the rooftop tea gardens also offer practical benefits such as providing shade during the hot summer months, which helps reduce the energy consumption and carbon emissions of the buildings below.

This particular complex has become a model project for other rooftop greening initiatives in Hangzhou, blending urban tourism with traditional tea culture.

This tea picking robot in South India will be a solution for labour shortage. What about other aspects like quality and ethics ?

Tea is a way of life in this subcontinent. Indians can’t imagine a day with out their favorite cuppa. Indian Darjeeling, Assam and Nilgiri teas are always a treat to sip. Anyway, labour shortage is one of the burning issued faced by South Asian tea growers like India and Sri Lanka. As SMB Story had reported, Valparai, a hill station in Tamil Nadu, is renowned for its production of high-quality teas. Yet, the once bustling valleys filled with labourers, now face a shortage as many labourers have migrated to the plains for better opportunities. In conversation with SMBStory, G Sundarrajan, CEO and Co-founder of Surinova, which provides business solutions to the farming sector, recalls that around 20 years ago, Valparai had about five lakh people in its electoral rolls which have now reduced to just a lakh, highlighting the impact of migration in the region. Previously, South Indian plantations needed 6,000 labourers for a harvest cycle, but now only 1,300 are available. To address this labour shortage and ensure continuous tea harvests, Surinova introduced a tea robot / e-vehicle called “T-Rover” in 2022.

Process

T-Rover is designed to navigate slopes up to 30 degrees with ease through its sensors and controllers and its precision engineering picks tea leaves for processing. As an e-vehicle, it saves on fuel costs and keeps the plantation environment clean. T-Rover is operated remotely via a joystick-like controller and is easy to use even for semi-skilled workers. 

This robot can do the work of 28 people, requiring just one operator and two assistants. This innovation opens up opportunities for people to pursue or rover operator jobs, thus stemming the tide of migration from their hometowns.

The company is now in talks with other tea growing countries like Sri Lanka, Kenya, Tanzania, etc, to export their machine.

It’s true that machines like this will provide some relief to labour shortage, but the quality of product is up to the questions, as South Indian climate is more tropical. So there are tea flsuhes at different ages and stanges of the bush. In temperate countries like Japan and China where they experince seasons, generally use machines during Summer and Early autumn. Also in temperate countries tea flushes emerge at once and located at the same level of tea bush. They limit machine harvesting during spring season when they get their first flush considering the quality of end product. Therefore, it would be better to use this machine during high cropping seasons in tropical countries.

These fruity flavored tea tablets will delight Japanese Palate

No exception in Japan as well. As SORA NEWS 24 had reported, A new line of tea tablets uses the family crests of six famous samurai clans from Japan’s Sengoku era along with uniquely selected flavors for each.

Japanese tea company Olive has joined the growing ranks offering high-quality tea in tablet form, sometimes cleverly called “chablets” (combining the English with the Japanese word for tea, cha). Its latest chablet offering is sure to appeal to history buffs with its connection to Japan’s Sengoku warring states period from the 15th and 16th centuries, when the families of prominent samurai vied for power in almost continuous uprisings and civil war.

Here are the clans and their respective flavors along with the origins of the natural flavors.

● Tokugawa: Strawberry-flavored Ceylon tea, Shizuoka Prefecture
● Takeda: Grape-flavored Ceylon and Darjeeling tea, Yamanashi Prefecture
● Toyotomi: Sweet osmanthus-flavored matcha with gold dust, Osaka Prefecture
● Oda: Peach leaf-flavored orange pekoe tea, Aichi Prefecture
● Akechi: Chestnut, apple, rosehips-flavored Assam tea, Gifu and Kyoto Prefectures
● Chosokabe: Pear and sweet osmanthus-flavored Japanese black tea, Kochi Prefecture

The tea flavors themselves aren’t the only draw because the box itself is a gorgeous keepsake with the six family crests printed in gold on the packaging. It’s even designed to stand upright with the help of two small leg stands so that you can enjoy it as a decoration after finishing the tea.

In addition, each one is perfectly portioned with the right amount of condensed tea so that you don’t have to do any measuring or remove any tea leaves. For hot tea, simply infuse one tea tablet in 180 milliliters (6.1 ounces) of hot water for three minutes, and for iced tea, infuse one tea tablet in 500 milliliters of cold water for one hour.

Let’s email Google suggesting a tea theme for International Tea Day, May 21st

Tea is the most popular beverage in the world after water. Tea has been refreshing the mankind for more than 5000 years. On December 19, 2019, the United Nations General Assembly passed resolution 74/241, declaring May 21st ‘INTERNATIONAL TEA DAY‘. As Tea & Herbal Association of Canada had posted, tea lovers should aim to elevate tea and celebrate it around the globe. The resolution acknowledges the “… urgent need to raise public awareness of the importance of tea for rural development and sustainable livelihoods and to improve the tea value chain to contribute to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.” Meantime, Google is the most commonly used search engine in the world.

I would like to request all tea lovers to send an email to Google requesting a tea theme for International Tea Day, May 21st, every year moving forward. Let’s pass the message to the international community and encourage them to do the same as well.

The power of the tea industry is in a collective voice. And to that end, we have an oppportunity we are asking EVERYONE to jump on.

As you may know, Google dedicates its front page to major events, important dates etc. through something called a “Google Doodle“. These ‘doodles’ appear on the front search page of Google which dominates the world’s searches. Controlling 85% of the searches done worldwide, the impact of people seeing the ‘doodle’ is around 40,000 searches every second.

The Google team receives suggestions from around the world on which ‘doodle’ to consider. Their team then deliberates over the suggestions and compiles the chosen ones for the year. I should mention that their team also creates all the art work.  

I am sure Google team is also enjoying their tea with a great deal of joy. So they may not neglect the request from the world tea community.

Tanzania launches tea auction to compete with regional giant Kenya

Tea is a way of life in East Africa. Rich soil, tropical climate makes African CTC teas ideal to sip after adding milk. Kenya, Malawi, Burundi, Uganda and Tanzania is among main tea growers in Africa. As TV4 Official instagram page had reported, Tanzania held its first ever tea auction on November 13 in Dar es Salaam, in an event that was aimed at transforming the tea industry in the country.

As a result, Tanzania has revealed plans to stop exporting its tea through the port of Mombasa in Kenya. The auction is expected to open markets for over 65 tonnes of tea at the ports of Dar es Salaam and Tanga in Tanzania. This move aimed at boosting farmers’ earnings and increasing the value of its tea on the global market.

Media outlet The Standard quoted Tea Board of Tanzania director general Mary Kipeja as saying that the tea auction would establish the country as a central hub for neighbouring tea-producing countries to trade their goods.

“Apart from minimising market costs, the tea auction is going to be a part and parcel of the implementation of the local content agenda, therefore empowering Tanzanians economically,” she said.

Kipeja added that the auction is going to significantly change the income of large and small-scale growers because costs incurred for tea transporting to Mombasa will now be used for strengthening and improving productivity.

The auction is expected to open markets for over 65 tons of tea at the ports of Dar es Salaam and Tanga in Tanzania.

Ten processors have already signed contracts with brokers with seven others being in the process of finalising agreement documents.

In recent years, Tanzania has recorded a decline in tea exports and earnings after raking in $12.2mn after exporting 7,875 tons in the 2022/23 financial year. During the 2020/21 financial year, the country exported 24,000 tons earning $39mn.

Browns completes acquisition of James Finlay Kenya

Tea is the most popular beverage in the world after water. So many things are happening in the world of tea just to bring a nice cup of tea to the hands of tea lovers. Finlays is a reputed firm which has got a long history in Kenya and is continuing to invest in the country through its continued ownership of the Saosa tea extracts facility, and its Kenyan tea sourcing and packing operation James Finlay Mombasa. Saosa manufacturers a range of tea extracts and aromas, adding significant value to the Kenyan economy. As Tea & Coffee Trade Journal had reported, Browns Investment PLC has announced the completion of its acquisition of Kenyan tea estates business, James Finlay Kenya, from Finlays.

The sale was first announced in May 2023, with Finlays selecting Browns Investments PLC as the approved buyer based on its strong legacy of guiding its tea estates to continued growth, but also its focus on doing so sustainably while supporting its workforce and local communities.

James Finlay Kenya is a grower, manufacturer and supplier of Kenyan tea. It covers a total self-contained area of 10,300 hectares, including 5,200 hectares of tea fields over nine tea estates. The sale includes all parts of James Finlay Kenya Ltd except the Saosa tea extraction facility which will remain under Finlays’ ownership and will become known as ‘Finlays Extracts, Kenya’.

Headquartered in Colombo, Browns has a proud heritage in operating plantation businesses, owning Maturata Plantations, Hapugastenne Plantations PLC, and Udapussellawa Plantations PLC. It is one of the largest tea producing companies in Sri Lanka consisting of 49 individual estates that stretch across an area of over 30,000 hectares and employs over 10,000 individuals.

As part of the sale agreement, Browns and Finlays have mutually agreed to acknowledge the long-standing support of the local community by offering 15% of shares in James Finlay Kenya for public sale through the Kipsigis Highlands Multipurpose Cooperative Society.

James Finlay Kenya, which will become known as ‘Browns Plantations Kenya’ in due course, is Brown’s first investment in the Kenyan tea industry which it sees as an exciting opportunity for growth. In December 2021, Browns acquired Finlays’ Sri Lankan tea estates business, which has gone from strength to strength, demonstrating Browns’ successful commitment to sustainable growth.
