A Ceylon Tea Stall Set Up to Promote ‘Ceylon Green Tea’ in Australia

Ceylon Tea coming from the resplendent island nation, Sri Lanka is recognized for her well balanced tasting profile by tea connoisseurs all over the globe. Meantime, following Portuguese princess Catherine’s introduction of tea in 1660 AD, this wonderful beverage eventually became UK’s favorite drint. Ultimately, tea had the honour of being the national beverage in England. With no doubt, tea provided the refreshment, stimulation, relaxation and good health for Brits to build up a massive empire. Sri Lanka Tea Board is the government body which is responsible for international promotion of Pure Ceylon Tea. As Sri Lanka Tea Board had published, A Ceylon Tea stall was set up to promote ‘Ceylon Green Tea’ given the increasing demand of Australians for sustainable, nutrient rich and a healthy drink. This event had been organized by Australia Sri Lanka Parliamentary Friendship Group on 19th June 2023 in Canberra.

The Sri Lanka Tea Board sponsored ‘Ceylon Green Tea Stall on , while ‘Dilmah’, a prominent Ceylon Tea exporter in the Australian market provided gift tea (flavoured green tea) to the invitees. Ceylon tea promotion videos depicting ‘sustainable-grown’ variety of Ceylon tea for the world market were screened at the reception. The event was held alongside a live demonstration on ‘Ceylon Green Tea Tasting Session’ by the staff of the Mission.

It’s not certain how effective the Ceylon green tea promotion will be in these key markets. Sri Lanka is well known and recognized for it’s unique, tasty and high quality black tea. But if Sri Lanka is going to promote green teas, responsible officers have to find ways and means to differentiate from Japanese and Chinese green teas. Japanese and some of the top green teas in China are much more superior than Ceylons while China and Vietnam produces much cheaper green teas to the mass market.

New Home of Iconic Melbourne Tea Rooms, To Open by Easter 2021

Being the most popular beverage after water, tea has spread to each and every corner in the world. Australia is mainly a coffee drinking nation. But a considerable portion of Aussie population loves their tea. Multi-ethnic / multi-cultural community (Indian, Chinese, Sri Lankan etc) in Australia has brought a vast range of Teas in to the nation. Tea is also grown commercially in Australia. By the way, as Commercial Real Estate had reported, The 1892 Hopetoun Tea Rooms, a much-loved Melbourne tea venue, has signed a lease on the 1859 Kozminsky building on Bourke Street, close to the Bourke Street Mall in the city center.

The tea rooms are so popular around Australia for their attractive displays of cakes and savories in the front window, with queues usually waiting to be able to get inside to purchase. They went into administration earlier this year after the dispute with The Block’s owners and were put up for sale in March, amid fears they could be lost to the city forever.

But Indian businessman Mr. Vikramjeet Singh, with a tea plantation background, is the new owner of the business and, after extensive remodelling work to the building at 421 Bourke Street by Sydney-based architects Landini Associates, is hoping to open by Easter 2021.

Mr Singh mentioned “We had to be really conscientious when choosing the new home for this iconic Melbourne brand which has served high teas to generations of Australians over the last 128 years of its beautiful history,”.

Mr Singh is planning for a casual cafe to be on the ground floor, formal tea rooms on the first level for high teas and functions, and the kitchen at the top.

The tea rooms were named after the wife of the first Governor-General of Australia in 1901, and former Governor of Victoria, John Hope, the seventh earl of Hopetoun. Lady Hopetoun, a Scots-born Irish aristocrat, was said to have been the one to have introduced Melbourne to the ritual of high tea and laid the foundation for tea rooms.

So, tea lovers in Melbourne will soon have the privilege to enjoy a nice cuppa at this wonderful, historic venue.

European Speciality Tea Association Launches TEA 101 Online Course

Tea is the most popular beverage in the world after water. But still education plays a vital role in making this wonderful beverage popular. It’s a medium / long term process. By the mean time, as Tea & Coffee Trade Journal had reported, European Speciality Tea Association (ESTA) has launched an online introductory tea education seminar, TEA 101 together with Australian Tea Masters, specifically aimed at entry level tea students who are not able to attend traditional tea education courses due to the current COVID 19 pandemic situation.

The course, that can be completed in one or several visits was developed by Australian Tea Masters and has been successfully delivered by them for several years. The European Tea Association version was amended to suit European markets, the course is offered free of charge to their members and has a cost of 45 Euros (£40) for non-members. All successful students will receive a certificate jointly issued by both parties.

Alexis Kaae, vice president and head of Education for ESTA mentioned: “We had not originally planned anything like this as our main focus is developing our Tea Certification Programme which will be launched later this year, but we felt that offering TEA 101 to our members and other tea students who are unable to attend training in personwould be beneficial to them, and early results are very encouraging.”

Sharyn Johnston, CEO and founder of Australian Tea Masters, said: “As members of European Speciality Tea Association we wanted to support them in the education of tea beginners in Europe so we were happy to share our experience and success with TEA 101 with them.”

Sri Lanka To Donate “Pure Ceylon Tea” for Australian Bushfire Refugees

During last few months we heard few heart breaking news related to fires. Amazon rain forest was burning last year & quite recently we saw the damage did by bushfire in Australia. Over thirty innocent people died and millions of animals also got caught to the fire. Even though Sri Lanka is a small developing island, she raised her helping hand to Australia. As Sri Lankan President’s Office had reported, His Excellency The President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in telephone conversation with The Honourable Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison expressed his empathy to Australians.

President Rajapaksa had sympathized deeply with the families who have lost their loved ones to the bushfire. Having suffered through natural disasters like the 2004 tsunami, floods and so on, President Rajapaksa said that Sri Lankan people fully understand the horror Australian citizens are suffering at this moment.

As world renowned Ceylon Tea is a favorite and comforting beverage to Australian citizens, President Rajapaksa hopes that the tea that Sri Lanka is donating would help raise the spirits of Australians in these trying times. Sri Lanka Tea Board is currently arranging a consignment with Sri Lankan Tea Export Companies to be dispatched as soon as possible. Heritage Teas where I am working for is also going to contribute with 25’000 enveloped tea bags on behalf of innocent bushfire refugees.

a. According to a claim made by the International Standard Organization (ISO), Ceylon tea is the Cleanest Tea origin in the world considering pesticide residues. Sri Lankan authorities have imposed strict regulations on agro-chemical usage in order to meet Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) of European Union (EU) and Japan.

One would enjoy a light, fragrant Nuwara-Eliya Tea from the highest mountain peak with Citrus notes while another is enjoying a strong, full bodied Ruhuna Tea from Ruhuna region situated in the down south. d. Sensory-wise, Ceylon Tea has got a well-balanced taste with ideal strength, flavor and aroma for a perfect cup of tea.


e. Although hand shears and mechanical tea harvesters are used pluck at very few tea fields, Sri Lankan tea is plucked exclusively by human hand.

Tea & Wine. Does It Really Contain Tea ?

Tea is the most popular beverage after water. But when someone mentions the word “Tea” what’s the perception you get ? In my opinion, no matter whether it’s a beverage or any other application, Tea can only be derived from the plant Camellia sinensis. As The Plus Ones had reported, Pernod Ricard and popular Organic Tea bar The Rabbit Hole have developed an innovative drink called ” Tea & Wine” which is a new innovative product that is crafted from Australian wine that has been infused with tea (According to company claim). The range includes an unoaked Chardonnay infused with Egyptian chamomile blossoms and a Cabernet Sauvignon infused with Sri-Lankan chai / spices. There is no doubt that this is a wonderful innovative drink which both tea and wine lover would like to try. But does it really contain tea ?

The team experimented with 40 wine varietals, many tea / tisane combinations and numerous infusion practices before finding the finished product. After exhibiting the product at the Sydney Tea Festival, the team discovered that the two most attractive Tea & Wine products were the Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Chardonnay is combined with the chamomile and shows golden apple and citrus with a balanced sweetness and lemony notes. The Cabernet Sauvignon is combined with the aromatic warm Sri Lankan (Ceylonese) spices like ginger, cardamom, star anise and vanilla. So I can’t find any real tea in any of these varieties. As a Sri Lankan, I am so glad to know that the the spices / chai are from my mother land.

I am not against with this product, but I would like to suggest them to call this “Wine & Herbal Infusion” or “Wine & Tisane”. Tisane is a French term for herbal infusions. But it’s understandable that this range won’t be this much attractive without the word “Tea”. Good thing is that it really reflects the great power behind the word “Tea”. Seems like most beverages want to be a part of it.

If you really love to craft Tea Wine by your own with real tea, below is a suggestion from Sri Lanka Tea Board Promotion Website,

Ingredients

  • 4L of water
  • 60g of Ceylon black tea leaves
  • 250g of raisins
  • 250g of dates, pitted and chopped
  • 2 lemons, sliced
  • 450g of sugar
  • ¼ bottle of Ceylon Arrack (or brandy)

Preparation:

Boil the water, add tea leaves, and let it brew for 10 minutes. Do not strain. Add all the other ingredients, except arrack and keep it covered for 10 days. Stir well and keep it for another 4 days. Strain, filter and keep it for another week. Then add arrack and keep it for 1 or 2 weeks.
