Since it’s discovery by the Chinese emperor Shen Nong, tea drink was refreshing the man kind for generations. This 5000 year old drink eventually became the most popular beverage in the world after water. By the way, As Global Tea Initiative had reported, The Global Tea Initiative for the Study of Tea Culture and Science (GTI) is holding their 5th Annual Colloquium on Thursday, January 16, 2020 and Friday, January 17, 2020 at the UC Davis Conference Center in Davis, California. This year’s event is co-organized with the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science (RMI).

Talks will be transdisciplinary. Panels will delve into the health, history, and various attributes of tea and wine—considering site, terroir and appellations, sensory aspects, aesthetics and collecting, and developing markets. In addition to UC Davis faculty, speakers will arrive from Indonesia, Switzerland, Germany, and France.

Being the most consumed beverage after water, tea plays an important role in day today life of billions of tea lovers around the world. This wonderful beverage provides refreshment, stimulation, relaxation and priceless health benefits to the mankind. In order to recognize tea, UN names a day as “International Tea Day”. This year we celebrated it on 15th December. But as Masterstalk had reported, At its formal meeting on November 26, the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly approved a resolution which stipulates the annual celebration of International Tea Day on May 21. The draft project resolution was approved by 118 votes, with 3 against and 45 abstentions.

The month of May was proposed for celebrating International Tea Day as it’s the quality tea manufacturing season in most tea producing countries. In temperate regions like China, Darjeeling, Japan etc. spring crop is harvested in late March to April. The quality of spring flushes (specially the 1st flush) is extremely high since those are the flushes emerge after few months of dormancy during winter and early spring. During this dormant period, chemical matter available in tea (Polyphenls, Theanines, Alkaloids etc) are concentrated. These teas are entering to the foreign market place by May.

The document, in particular, notes that tea production and manufacturing is the main source of livelihoods for millions of families, it contributes to the battle against hunger, the reduction of extreme poverty, the empowerment of women and the sustainable utilization of terrestrial ecosystems. It is also noted that drinking tea can be good for health and has cultural and educational potential. The resolution calls for the promotion of tea consumption, especially in tea growing nations, where its per-capita consumption is relatively low (Exception: Turkey), and counteracting the reduction in tea consumption in traditional buying nations. International Tea Day can be one way of addressing these challenges.

Even though USA is a coffee drinking nation, there were legends like Late Steven Smith, the founder of Tazo tea company, co-founder of Stash Tea Company and Late David Walker, the founder of Walker Tea LLC who foresaw the trend for specialty tea in the US. Bigelow Tea is also a company which has been serving good teas to USA tea lovers for almost 75 years. As Tea & Coffee Trade Journal had reported, Cindi Bigelow, president of Bigelow Tea, was honoured with the National Workplace Lifetime Achievement Award from Character.org for inspiring people to develop good character and for her company’s sustainability efforts, which assist protect the environment.

Character.org said: “This award serves to recognise role models and mentors like you who inspire us to dream – to reach for joy, laughter, compassion, hope, integrity, and all the character traits that you and your family have displayed through your tireless efforts to not only create a sustainable quality product but also creating a lasting impact by limiting harm on the environment through your company’s initiatives.”

Cindi shared examples of how her father taught her the meaning of character and said: “My father believed nothing was too small in terms of acts of kindness or in making sure you were always trying to do the right thing”. She added further saying “That is how I have tried to run my life and run the business. I have realized more and more as the years have gone by that we are all role models — no, we are not perfect, and we make mistakes — but we are role models to everyone around us.”

She has got a BSc degree from Boston College and an MBA from Northwestern University, Kellogg School of Management. She has received honorary doctorates from Johnson & Wales University, the University of New Haven and Fairfield University. She often speaks to students and industry leaders on business ethics and career development.

In brief, it is a day all about tea. Here you will have the pleasure of learning about tea, tea preparation, tea culture and history and many tea tastings

More than 40 national and international vendors who will be selling and sampling their teas for guests. Also there will be some craftspeople who create tea-related art. All of the vendors on the floor will have at least a 50% focus on tea or tea-related items. 

There will be over 80 classes and lectures to continue tea education for both tea industry insiders and the tea consuming public and they also have something new for the industry and consumers – a Livestream class selection. You can attend 14 lectures remotely if you cannot attend in person. These lectures will also be recorded and accessible on demand later to those who purchase the Livestream class package. There are also special meal events on November 1 where attendees can connect with luminaries of the tea industry, with representatives of tea producing cultures and network with others in the tea trade.

Even though North America is dominated by coffee, tea is emerging thanks to health and wellness trend specially among younger generation. By identifying this emerging trend, tea festivals are held in areas like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Kansas City etc. But Pennsylvania and North-West tea festivals are overlapping on coming Saturday (28 September). In my personal opinion, this is not a good situation for USA tea lovers. Yes, those are regional fairs, but there must be at least few tea enthusiasts, specially businessmen who wish to attend both as visitors & exhibitors. Anyway, I am going to bring you information on both festivals. It’s up to you to decide where to go.

1. Pennsylvania Tea Festival

Date & Time: September 27 and Saturday, September 28, 2019 

Venue: gardens of the Rosemary House and Sweet Remembrances in downtown Mechanicsburg, PA

The festival will feature live music, lectures, guided tea tastings, tea samplings offered by many tea experts, over 20 vendors, and a resource table. The event will be held in the herb gardens of The Rosemary House. A wide variety of specialty teas will be exhibited to expand and enhance your knowledge on tea and tea culture.
