Will Sri Lanka Plant Twenty Million Tea saplings This Year As Promised in Dec 2020

Even though Tea has got a history of more than 5000 years, Ceylon Tea coming from the resplendent island nation Sri Lanka has got a short history of 153 years. Since the initiation of commercial tea cultivation in Sri Lanka by Scottish planter James Taylor, eventually this fine tea became one of the most favorite teas among tea lovers all over the globe. By the way, as Daily News had reported, will Sri Lanka plant Twenty million tea saplings in 2021 to raise national tea production ? Company Estate Reforms, Tea and Rubber Estates Related Crops Cultivation and Factories Modernization and Tea and Rubber Export Promotion State Minister Kanaka Herath mentioned this to Daily News in Dec 2020.

The state minister mentioned that national tea production should be increased, since it has been plunging since 2015. “Therefore, the State Ministry is assisting the private sector to set up 500 tea nurseries to get 25 million saplings annually,” he said. He was addressing the gathering after providing financial assistance and water pumps to new tea nurseries in the Kandy District. The Tea Small Holdings Development Authority (TSHDA) organised the ceremony in this regard. It was held under the theme ‘A Revival of the Golden Leaf’ (Ran Dallata Nawodayak) at the Red Cross (ICRC) International Committee in Kandy on Monday. The State Minister said that the Government will buy the tea plants at Rs. 26 each from the nursery owners.

“Five hundred tea planters will be provided with cash and water pumps. The President knows the value of the tea sector and has focused on it with a vision of prosperity,” the state Minister said.

Mr. Herath said that the export industry collapsed in the COVID epidemic and the foreign exchange that flowed into the country from the Tea Industry also dried up.

He said the tea production had collapsed over the past five years from 340 million kilograms in 2014 to 290 million kilograms. The drought also severely affected this year’s tea production, he said. State Minister Herath said that about 75 per cent of the tea production comes from small tea estates. He said that plans are afoot to increase tea production in the next five years.

With the increasing demand for tea during pandemic era, it’s important to increase tea crop by maintaining the premium quality of Ceylon Tea. Let’s keep an eye on how this project progresses.

Sainsbury’s To Introduce Own-Brand, Plant-Based Tea Bags In June 2021

Following Portuguese princess Catherine’s introduction of tea to England in 1660 AD, Brits started loving this refreshing, stimulating, calming and healthy beverage. Eventually tea became the national beverage in England. Anyway, modern day tea drinkers are paying more attention on different tea types, sustainability and health before sipping their favorite cuppa. By the way, as European Supermarket Magazine had reported, UK retailer Sainsbury’s has announced plans to introduce a plant-based material for its own-brand tea bags from June 2021 onwards.

The tea bags are made with Polylactic acid (PLA), a renewable plant-based material that is industrially compostable, unlike the current oil-based plastic tea bags.

PLA is made from the sugar found in cornstarch, cassava, or sugarcane.

Sainsbury’s is testing the new plant-based alternative in its own-brand tea bags.

Director of product, packaging and innovation at Sainsbury’s, Claire Hughes, mentioned, “This extensive rollout of our new tea bags is another example of how we are looking to implement new innovative products that will reduce the impact our business has on the environment.

“Our move towards plant-based tea bags has required significant time and multiple trials to ensure that our customers receive the same great quality tea bag and we look forward to the rollout in stores this year.”

The retailer’s current own-brand tea bags are made of 75% natural fibres and 25% oil-based plastic sealing material (polypropylene).

This sealing material ensures that the tea bag remains intact and the tea leaves don’t seep into the cup.

Plant-Based Material

The supermarket chain intends to introduce the new plant-based material in more than 815 million tea bags a year.

It will also remove the outer plastic wrapping from 11 products to eliminate over 5.3 million pieces of plastic a year.

The tea bags can be disposed of in kerbside food or garden waste bins and general household waste bins.

Will Kenya Impose Zero VAT on Tea Packaging Machinery Introduced in 2020 Finance Bill ?

Beautiful African nation, Kenya is well known for it’s coloury CTC teas ideal for milk tea. Recently, they have started to focus more on Pure orthodox teas as well. By the way, as Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture in Kenya Mr. Peter Munya has mentioned, Kenyan government intend to impose ZERO Value Added Tax (VAT) on tea with the purpose of increasing value added tea exports as well as to increase the consumption of locally packed tea. But as Mr Munya pushes for the zero-rating of tea, Treasury must assist his efforts by zero-rating tea packing machinery that was introduced in the 2020 Finance Bill.

Potential packers will need to invest in high-quality packaging machines in order to compete with international brands. Adding 16 per cent to an already expensive machine will only slow down value added tea exports.

Though Kenya is ranked third in global tea production following China and India, Kenya is the leading tea exporter in the world, sadly though, In 2019, Kenya exported slightly below five per cent of teas in value-added form compared to Sri Lanka’s 55 per cent. The difference between the auction and FOB (up to the ship) price of Sri Lanka tea and Kenya tea was USD 1.00 and USD 0.05 respectively.This is due to an unfavourable policy and tax regime, key being accessibility of tea by packers as they have to pay a refundable 16 per cent VAT upfront to access the tea, but that takes years to be refunded.

The Tea Directorate has two categories of traders, buyers and packers. While the buyers can buy tea from the VAT zero-rated auction, packers can only buy theirs from buyers or producers and pay VAT upfront.

So in Kenya, it is better to be a buyer than a packer. But, it is the packer who creates employments, raise foreign exchange earnings and expand nation’s existing markets.

Treasury should also consider waiving the newly introduced one per cent minimum tax for those venturing into value addition.
