‘Ceylon Tea’ Promoted in Australia As An Immune Booster to Fight COVID-19 Pandemic

Tea was first grown commercially in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) by the Scottish planter James Taylor in 1867. Eventually Ceylon Tea became one of the finest tasting teas in the world thanks to her overall, well balanced tasting profile with ideal strength, body, aroma and flavour. Tea lovers from all over the globe grabbed Ceylon Tea with both hands. By the meantime, As Colombo Times had reported, Ceylon Tea was promoted in Australia as an immune booster to minimize the effect or prevent from COVID-19 pandemic. This was highlighted during a well-attended ‘Virtual Ceylon Tea Evening’ organized by the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Melbourne, in association with the Sri Lanka Tea Board, on 21 October 2020.

The ‘Virtual Ceylon Tea Evening’ was a novel concept to promote ‘Ceylon Tea’ during this tricky time. Among 40+ participants of this online event, there were members from the Australian federal parliament, Parliament of the State of Victoria, Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Sri Lanka-Australia Chamber of Commerce, Aus-Lanka Business Council, Australia-Sri Lanka Council Inc, Consular Corps of Victoria, and hoteliers in Melbourne.

The Chairman of Sri Lanka Tea Board Mr. Jayantha Molligoda, joining from Colombo admired the Aussie consumer for their continued desire for Ceylon tea and said the “Ceylon Tea Global Promotional Campaign” commencing in 2021 will cover Australian market, to bring the Australian consumer closer with Ceylon Tea. Mr. Dilhan Fernando, CEO of Dilmah demonstrated tasting of different Ceylon regional teas and making of a proper cup of tea.

Ms. Sharyn Johnston, The Founder of Australian Tea Masters, Ceylon tea lover Ms. Manuela Erb and Foodbank Victoria Food Procurement Manager Mr. Sunil Lakshmanasinghe were among the other panelists from Australia. The high quality of Pure Ceylon tea, health benefits of drinking tea especially during COVID 19 pandemic, tea’s ability to act as an immune booster, antioxidant qualities and ability to minimize the stress hormone cortisol in the body were pointed out by the panellists. Earlier this year, the Foodbank Victoria distributed the gift Ceylon tea consignment from the President of Sri Lanka for the victims of the Australian bushfires.

Australia is a key market for Ceylon tea. Sri Lanka was the second largest tea exporter to Australia in 2018 with 2391 metric tons of tea; 12% of Sri Lanka’s exports to Australia in that year. In 2019, Sri Lanka exported over US$ 25 million worth of tea to Australia.

Sri Lanka Tea Board established a separate area for Ceylon Tea at the mall and it’s offering details of Ceylon tea growing regions and lion logo, Ceylon tea dyed face mask and most importantly tea tasting. This featured mall offers customers a wide variety of Ceylon Tea signature brands packed in Sri Lanka with Lion Logo.

Ms. Pavithri Peiris, Director Promotion at Sri Lanka Tea Board says “Degustation sessions and Educational Programs will be started in 2021 due to the pandemic situation in Ukraine. She also said that SLTB was planning to roll out the Ceylon Tea promotional Campaign in Ukrainian by early next year and the promotions would be conducted three ways, targeting Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs), public relations and search engine optimization.

Sri Lanka Tea Board is also planning to conduct promotional and branding activities for Ceylon Tea at this shopping Mall and some of the identified outlets of Silpo Supermarket Chain such as degustation in every week, category Branding and Placement for Ceylon Tea brands, Shelf-Talkers with-Lion Logo, educational programs about Ceylon Tea, Tea Ceremonies and Ceylon Tea competition and winners will visit Ceylon Tea plantations. 2020 World Tea Best of Award Winners Revealed !

Tea is the most popular beverage after water. This wonderful refreshing, stimulating and calming beverage has got more than 5000 years of history. In modern days, continuous innovation and recognizing talented individuals who serve tea trade is so vital for the betterment of the industry. By the mean time, As World Tea News had reported, Questex announced the winners of the 2020 World Tea Best of Awards, which features tea leaders across ten key categories. Award Winners were named during the World Tea Virtual Summit that took place Oct. 12-14, 2020.

Quality Tea Could be Grown in Scotland – with Little Assistance from Scientists

Tea has been deep rooted in to Scottish souls. But no one would believe that tea can be grown in this wonderful part of the world. As Rebecca Shearer had reported to The Press and Journal – UK, A group of Scottish tea planters are on a mission to find the perfect brew that can be grown on home soil. There are more than 40 tea growers throughout Scotland and now a group of those planters are working together with a research team from the Rural Innovation Support Service (RISS), led by the Soil Association, to investigate the most profitable and highest-quality tea varieties / cultivars which can be grown on their home soil.

Richard Ross, chair of Tea Scotland said that though tea producing may be associated with warmer climes, Scotland has very similar soil to these places and we, as a nation, have a long history with tea planting.

“Black tea and green tea are the two teas we’d really be looking to do. Herbal teas, though they are very nice, are a different proposition. Effectively we’re competing with the sort of teas that are now mostly grown in India, China and Kenya, which seems like an odd thing to try to emulate in windy and cold Scotland but the conditions in these places are actually quite similar to what we can produce in Scotland, as long as you get the right plants in the first place.

Richard added further “There’s clearly a market for Scottish grown tea. Throughout history, there’s a really strong tradition of Scottish tea planters, and we’ve always had expertise in growing and processing tea. My own grandfather was a tea planter in Sri Lanka, and I grew up with these stories of Scots taking tea around the world. I like the idea of bringing tea home.

“It looks like there are as many as maybe 40 different growers around Scotland. Our members come from a real geographic spread – from Dumfries to Orkney, from Fife to Arran – so we’re starting to understand between us what’s possible in different parts of Scotland.”

This group of tea planters will be guided by Dr David Marshall from Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) who will assist planters to understand the genetic diversity of the tea varieties they are growing – but he conceded that the pandemic has thrown timescales into question.

As some of Scotland’s growers specialize in black tea, others in green tea, all of the different varieties will be considered in this new research to find which has the most potential.

The group of planters is being facilitated by Alastair Trail of SAC Consulting, part of SRUC, who was appointed by RISS to assist both Richard and David see the project through.

Are Ceylon Tea Plantation Workers Really being Exploited ?

Currently, there is a campaign by a non-governmental organisation against Ceylon Tea by highlighting that tea workers are being exploited on the plantations. Is that really true ? Is that a reason for you to stop sipping Ceylon Tea ? Let’s discuss.

It’s true that Ceylon Tea hasn’t got a long history as Chinese tea. Tea was first grown commercially in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) by the Scottish planter James Taylor in 1867. Eventually Ceylon Tea became one of the finest tasting teas in the world thanks to her overall, well balanced tasting profile with ideal strength, body, aroma and flavour. During this short history, Asia’s Sweetheart (Sri Lanka) had the honour of having highly skilled plantation workers, specially tea pluckers. With no doubt They are the unsung heroes who really contributed for the betterment of “Pure Ceylon Tea”.

1. Contribution from Small Holders

The share of smallholders’ contribution to total tea production in Sri Lanka has gradually increased. It was above 70% during the period 2010-2013 and has continued to increase up to 76%. So the plantation sector is below 30%. Now you know for certain more than 70% of the teas coming out of Sri Lanka is produced with no worker exploitation.

It’s true that most plantation worker houses are not up to the standard. But now the things are changing slowly. Plantation workers have been given houses in the plantation area itself. They have also been provided some land plots to grow vegetables and other food stuff for their own consumption. Some plantation companies have granted small tea plots for plantation families. In this case, the family manages the plot and sells green leaves to the processing factory.

3. Education

Here, Children in the plantation community are provided pre-school education. Even teachers are diploma holders emerged from the plantation community. In addition to that, infants are looks after while their mothers are working at the field.

After pre-school education, plantation children are provided free education up to degree level. Most Primary schools (up to grade 5) are situated within the plantation. Secondary schools are situated in towns.

“Youth from the community have qualified as doctors and lawyers … opportunities for upward mobility are available,” the planters’ association said.

4. Health Care

Health facilities are provided free of charge for all Sri Lankan citizens. No exception for plantation workers as well. A qualified doctor and a mid-wife are employed at every tea estate in Sri Lanka.

After finishing estate works, most men start working at other places like hotels in near by towns to earn an extra income.

Here, I have shown you the good side of the picture. It’s true that the plantation community is facing many difficulties. But the situation is getting better

If you refrain from drinking Ceylon tea thinking that plantation workers are being not treated well, it affects on their potential wage hikes, annual bonus and other welfare activities. Ideally, international buyers and NGOs should help plantation community directly without just complaining governments of tea growing nations like Sri Lanka, India, Kenya, Malawi etc.

Nepal Orthodox Tea Gets It’s Own Trademark

Nepal is one of the most beautiful nations situated in the footfalls of world’s largest mountain range Himalayan. As The Kathmandu Post had reported last month, Nepal’s orthodox tea has now got its own trademark, 157 years after the country started growing tea. The trademark includes the words ‘Nepal Tea Quality from the Himalaya’. Launched in 2017 and formally executed last month, it is the first brand of agriculture produce in the nation.

This trademark will help Nepal brand and market its tea, that has been facing many issues for over a century, in the international market. Out of 42 tea factories who applied for the trade mark, only 12 tea factories and cooperatives in Fikkal, Ilam had the privilege to receive the trade mark. Trade marks were handed over by Hon. Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development Mr. Ghanashyam Bhusal which have adhered to the Nepal Orthodox Tea Certification Trademark Directive 2018.

Among these 12 factories, nine are from Ilam—Sandakphu Tea Processors, Himalayan Shangri La Tea Producers, High Hill Tea Producer Cooperative Society, Jasbire Tea Prasodhan, Gorkha Tea Estate, Nepal Green Tea and Speciality Tea, Oasis Tea Industries, Taragaun Tea Estate and Sakejung Hill Range Tea Processing Industry.

Two factories—Bokre Dada Orthodox Chiya Prasodhan Udhyog and Singhadevi Tea Producers Cooperative—are from Tehrathum, and one factory—Sagarmatha Tea Estate—is from Sankhuwasabha.

Now no one can use the same or similar brand as the one that has been registered. Trademark serves as a defense mechanism to protect a brand from loss of reputation, and has the potential to rise in value as an intangible asset.

Nepal is bit of an isolated country since they have to cross Indian boarder to reach the nearest sea port. So exporting operation is bit of a challenge to the nation.

Nepal has got a long history of tea cultivation. The first Ilam Tea Estate in the hills of Ilam district was established in 1863. History says that the first tea bushes in Nepal were planted from seeds that were gifted by the Chinese emperor to the prime minister Jung Bahadur Rana.

It is believed that tea plantations in Nepal started within the same decade, when it was introduced in the Darjeeling Hills of India.

There are many complaints from Indian tea professionals saying that cheaper Nepalese tea is being blended with Darjeeling or sell as Darjeeling in India. Now Nepal have got an opportunity to market their own teas world wide with the new trade mark. So let’s wait and see the progress.

Canada’s Only Tea Farm to Celebrate Tenth Anniversary !

Even though North American hot drink market is dominated by coffee, tea is emerging thanks to health and wellness trend specially among younger generation. Hawaii is known for her tea for few decades, but the passion of tea growing has already penetrated to USA mainland as well. Charleston tea plantation in South Carolina is the best example comes to my mind. Also in the US there is a League of Tea Growers. But can you image that the tea is grown even in Canada ? Yes they have been growing for a decade ! As COWICHAN VALLEY CITIZEN had reported, Westholme Tea Company, an 11-acre organic tea garden, tea shop, and gallery, is marking her tenth anniversary.

Celebrations are going to begin today: on Oct. 10 (the tenth day, of the tenth month, of the tenth year of the company growing Canadian Tea), Westholme Tea will officially launch new innovative products from both of its co-founders; Margit Nellemann and Victor Vesely.

The official re-opening of The Gallery at Westholme Tea and a brand-new series of ceramic works fresh from the kiln will be launched shortly.

A limited-edition Westholme-grown tea called No 10 Reserve Black, that is crafted from the finest tea flushes this year.

The firm is going to hold a staggered event, to deal with social distancing guidelines, from Oct. 10-20, with new products being made available each day at the online store and in the tea shop. Westholme Tea will also be holding a daily giveaway.
