Border Tensions Between India & China Have Not Affected Indian Tea Exports to China

China and India are the largest tea producing nations in the world. These two powerful nations may have some political issues, but it has very minimum influence on tea trade between these two giants. As The Economic Times had reported, Indian tea exports to China and Iran have gone up despite the economic uncertainty due to Covid-19 outbreak and the standoff between India and China on border issues. Chinese importers are giving good prices for Indian black tea and shipments to the country have already begun.

Mr. Mohit Agarwal, director, Asian Tea mentioned “Border tensions between the two countries have not affected exports of tea to China and The Chinese are buying both CTC and orthodox black teas.”

In 2019, India overtook Sri Lanka (Ceylon) in exports of tea to China riding on the increasing demand for black tea among Chinese millennials. India had exported 13.45 million kg of teas to China, whereas Sri Lanka, which had always been the leader in exports to China, was able to export 10 million kgs.

Indian tea production has already gone down by 140 million kg due to the lockdown this year. Even the weather has not been favourable in May and June in Assam as there has been excessive rains, likely impacting overall production.

Last year, India produced 1,389 million kg of teas.

Other than that, Iran has also started importing new season orthodox teas from last two week and is paying Rs 400 – Rs 450 per kg (USD 5.3 – 6.0), a price higher than that of last year.

So this is in deed a good news for Indian Tea Industry.

HACKLET 121 – Tea Hacks: Four Impressive Technical Innovations for Tea

Since it’s discovery by the Chinese emperor Shen Nong, tea was refreshing the man kind for generations. This 5000 year old drink eventually became the most popular beverage in the world after water. Largest tea producing nations in the world namely China and India are consuming most of their teas with in the country. Therefore tea is not traded around the world as coffee. As a result, tea industry is way behind coffee when it comes to innovations. In fact tea professionals are following coffee innovations. Anyway I would like to bring you 4 interesting technical innovations related to tea. The development of all these 4 items have been done about 4 years ago.

1. Tea Pi

This set us is designed to emulate commercial tea makers costing hundreds of dollars. The heart of the operation is a Raspberry Pi, making this one of the first Linux powered tea makers we’ve ever heard of. An Adafruit PowerSwitch Tail allows the Pi to control a standard tea kettle. The Pi monitors water temperature with a temperature sensor. A simple servo drops a tea basket into the water for brewing. When the time is up, the servo pulls the basket up and the tea is ready to serve. They had also planned to add voice control to his tea creation.

2.  ChaiBot.

This device was designed by [Adrian’s] son [Oliver] to combat a common issue. Both father and son would pour cups of tea, then get involved in a project. By the time they came back, they had ink. ChaiBot steeps the tea for a set amount of time, stirring every minute. The mechanics of the project came from an old CD-ROM drive. A PIC16F887 runs the show, ensuring the steep time is accurate, and activating the motor drive. When the tea is done, an ESP8266 sends a push notification to the user’s phone. The project is housed in a wooden case that fits perfectly on the kitchen counter.

3. Eye-O-Tea.

With this gadget, Our tea cup can join the Internet of Things. This equipment essentially is a web connected coaster with temperature monitoring built right in. Temperature is measured with a Melexis thermometer. An Arduino Pro Mini reads the temperature and passes it on to a WiFi module. The entire device is powered by a LiPo battery, and neatly housed in a gutted cup warmer. On the cloud side, we can use ThinkSpeak and freeboard.io to make an interface we can access with the mobile phone. If the tea is too hot, Eye-O-Tea will let us know. It will also send us an SMS if we forgot our cup and it’s going cold.

4. Camper Induction Cooker,

A 2016 Hackaday Prize entry. [Siggi] wanted hot liquids on the go, but he didn’t want to fool around with heating elements. An induction heater was the way to go. A Cypress PSOC micro controls the system. Metal travel style mugs can be used without modification. For ceramic or plastic mugs (Tea With Nipun never recommend plastic mugs since those plastic micro particles can come in to the hot brew), a metal washer (hopefully coated with something food safe) acts as an immersion heater. The project is definitely a bit unwieldy at the moment, but I could see [Siggi’s] idea being incorporated into automotive cup holders. [Siggi] put his project on hold. I hope seeing his work on the front page will get development moving again.

One might argue saying that there is nothing better than a freshly brewed tea pot with loose leaf tea. That’s quite true but technical innovations are also vital for the betterment of any industry. Therefore as tea industry professionals we should have strategies to attract innovative people to the industry. These 4 Innovations are quite interesting, aren’t they ?

European Tea Society Becomes European Speciality Tea Association

Tea was known to Chinese for more than 5000 years. But this wonderful beverage became popular in Europe just few centuries back. Today, Europe is mainly a coffee drinking region. But still there are so many tea lovers who are so passionate on speciality tea. As Tea & Coffee Trade Journal had reported, The European Tea Society is changing the name to the European Speciality Tea Association (ESTA), effective 1 July. This change happens following an overwhelming vote by the association’s members at the Annual General Meeting on 20 May 2020.

According to the European Specialty Tea Association, the reason behind the name change is to more accurately reflect the nature and purpose of the association as below:

  • The word ‘association’ is an inclusive and contemporary word, one that aligns with the values of the organisation, which are inclusive.
  • The word ‘association’ describes much more accurately what the organisation is, which is a members association.
  • Specialty Tea is very much at the heart of what the organisation does and believes in. It is enshrined in the association’s charter and mission and is now appropriately reflected in the name.

ESTA will provide and participate in a range of international events which engage the specialty tea community and promote tea excellence.

The logo will remain unchanged to assist promoting consistency and continuity, there will be significant changes in many areas of the association, such as a new three-year strategic plan that will continue to foster the association’s growth.

The association will be starting a major membership drive to reach new and potential members across Europe. It will also be introducing new membership categories: one for producers in tea growing countries, and one for a new type of person in the tea community, the tea barista.

ESTA aims to recruit members in some new regions such as Russia. Once the world starts to get back to some sort of normality, ESTA will attend events around Europe in order to promote the association, promote specialty tea, engage with local tea communities, gain new members and deliver knowledge. The association also stated that it is looking to increase the number of competitions that it organizes.

“Education and research are at the very core of the association’s value and mission, and we will be working extremely hard on our initiatives here, helped and supported by our growing team of volunteers,” mentioned David Veal, executive director of ESTA, in a statement.

Yorkshire Tea and PG Tips Join Brands in Backing Black Lives Matter

Eventually tea became the national beverage in England. With no doubt, tea provided the refreshment, stimulation, relaxation and good health for Brits to build up a massive empire. Now Yorkshire Tea & PG Tips, two of the most reputed brands in British Tea market uniting under the hashtag #solidaritea to back Black Lives Matter (BLM). As The Guardian had reported, The second and third largest tea companies in Britain have became the latest businesses to declare their support for the Black Lives Matter protests that have broken out around the world since the death of George Floyd.

Yorkshire Tea was replying to a tweet from a far-right activist, Laura Towler, expressing satisfaction that the brand had not come out in support of the movement.

“I’m dead chuffed that Yorkshire Tea has not supported BLM,” Towler tweeted on Monday, along with a smiley face emoji.

But Yorkshire Tea, which is owned by the Harrogate-based Bettys and Taylors Group, replied: “Please don’t buy our tea again. We’re taking some time to educate ourselves and plan proper action before we post. We stand against racism.”

It was soon joined by PG Tips, which tweeted: “If you are boycotting teas that stand against racism, you’re going to have to find two new tea brands now.” PG Tips is owned by the consumer goods conglomerate Unilever, which also makes Marmite and Pot Noodle among many other products.

The two brands won delighted approval from some social media users, with one tweeting: “Tea unity makes me emotional. Love it and its pure Britishness”.

But others were sceptical of the weight of the companies’ commitment, with many pointing out that neither had set out any details of their position or plans for action. One social media user said: “Can we have your full political declaration then please. Just so everyone is clear where you stand on all the issues rather than appearing to be opportunistic is order to sell more tea.”

The two tea firms are the latest to grapple with a corporate dilemma during the Black Lives Matter movement – whether declaring their support is a clear communication of brand values, or risks backfiring and appearing opportunistic.

Bettys and Taylors Group has no minority ethnic executives on its eight-strong board and senior executive group. It finished 34th out of 47 brands on a 2018 Ethical Consumer guide to the sector. Unilever’s PG Tips finished 46th, scoring two out of a possible 20 points.

Both companies include tea grown in Assam, India for their blends. These two companies have pointed to steps they have taken to improve the conditions of the workers in Assam, and have published a list of their suppliers. However, a Traidcraft report, published in January, accused them and a number of other UK tea brands of “knowing about the conditions for women working on tea estates but not doing enough about them”. The report urged greater transparency about the production process.

National Health Service UK Enjoys Ceylon Tea While Working Round The Clock

Tea was first grown commercially in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) by the Scottish planter James Taylor in 1867. Eventually Ceylon Tea became one of the finest tasting teas in the world thanks to her overall, well balanced tasting profile with ideal strength, body, aroma and flavour. In an era when the whole world is battling against COVID 19 epidemic, In order to appreciate the contribution being made by the National Health Service (NHS) UK which is at the front-line saving lives during the Covid-19 pandemic, a donation of Ceylon tea and disposable gloves to the staff of the National Health Service UK was made by Sri Lanka to coincide with the International Tea Day. Sri Lanka High Commission donated a consignment of Ceylon tea and gloves to Consultant Respiratory and Head of Respiratory Unit of Medway Hospital in Kent, Dr Gihan Hettiarachchi and his team. Dr Hettiarachchi who was recently featured in the “Good Morning Britain” TV programme was applauded by recovered Covid -19 patients for his professionalism and care towards them and their families during their difficult time.

The Sri Lanka Tea Board and six leading tea producers in Sri Lanka and manufacturer of  disposal gloves Dipped Products Ltd of the Hayleys Group contributed to this generous donation.

An assortment of Ceylon tea and a packet of Palm Pro gloves of Hayleys was also presented by the High Commission to Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, Minister of State for the Commonwealth, UN and South Asia at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

The High Commission also assisted the donation of Akbar Premium tea packs by the Conservative Friends of Sri Lanka in the UK to 18 National Health Service Hospitals.

These donations are emblematic of Sri Lanka’s commitment to the longstanding bilateral relations with the UK.
