European Union Representatives Visited Ceylon White Tea Plantation

Tea is the most popular beverage after water. Among all the tea types, White Tea is considered as one of the healthiest due to it’s minimal processing. Original white teas like silver needle / silver tips, Bai Mu Tan etc are coming from Fujian province of China mainland. In addition to that I have also experienced the unique taste of wild white tea from Yunnan province of China where tea was first discovered by the Chinese emperor Shen Nong about 5000 years back. Still world renowned Ceylon Tea has got a history of 152 years. But it’s amazing the way that tea plant adopted to local Sri Lankan conditions to become one of the finest tasting Black teas in the world. White tea is something which is new to Sri Lanka. But thanks to Herman Teas Ceylon White Teas are also world renowned at the moment. By identifying the value of this ethical business, European Union representatives visited Herman Tea’s white tea plantation situated in the Down South of Sri Lanka (Ceylon).

Representative had the pleasure of Tasting Ceylon White Teas as well as other tea types produced at the plantation. The signature product of this plantation is ‘Virgin White Tea’, a tea never touched by humans, and has caught the attention of tea enthusiasts all over the globe. Virgin White Tea is acclaimed for its uniqueness by many luxury tea connoisseurs. A lab analysis done by SGS of Switzerland revealed that ‘Herman Virgin White’ has an anti-oxidant content of 10.11%, which is said to be the highest naturally occurring content of anti-oxidants in any beverage. It’s a claim, but still this tea is extremely healthy. This wonderful tea was also presented by Jane Pettigrew at the World Expo in Las Vegas and won praise and appreciation. Ceylon Souchong, Saphire Oolong, and Flowery Cammellia are some of other teas produced at the estate factory.

  •  Award by the National Chamber of Exporters as the Best small scale exporter.
  •  ‘Most innovative teas in the world at The Anuga Food Fair’ in Cologne Germany.
  •  Virgin white tea is marketed and served at several luxury tea boutiques around the world, and amongst them is the coveted luxury tea salon Mariage Frères International of Faubourg Saint Honore, Paris.

The Estate has been in the family of Tea Connoisseur Mr. Herman Gunaratne for more than 100 years. It was once a part of a large plantation of 2200 acres and in 1974 with the nationalization of British plantations 1000 acres were taken over by the government and 1000 acres was lost by predecessor (who was the President of the Suicide club at that time, an informal association of gamblers) on the roll of the dice. Hence currently this white estate only comprises of a lush tea cultivation of 200 acres, of which tea is grown on 150 acres and the remaining 50 acres of the plantation consists of Rubber, Cinnamon, Pepper and Coconut.

European Union nations love to sip good teas. So I am quite certain that European Union representatives must have been really impressed with this tea plantation.

World’s Most Awarded Lumbini Tea Organized A Blood Donation Camp

Tea is the most popular beverage in the world after water due to many reasons. She provides stimulation (Alkaloids) and relaxation (L-theanine) at the same time while donating priceless health benefits and a great deal of refreshment. Even people who deal with this wonderful beverage are really nice and warm hearted. By proving this, Lumbini Tea which is known to be the World’s Most Awarded Tea Factory held their 12th annual blood donation campaign on 25th August 2019.

As Lumbini Tea Valley’s official Face Book page had reported, The founder of this reputed tea firm – Mr. Dayapala Jayawardena, the Managing Director of the company – Chaminda Jayawardena and the team organized one of the largest Blood Donation Campaigns in the Southern Sri Lanka, This great charity event was organized by the CUH Charity Foundation an arm of Lumbini Tea Valley.

The campaign was inspired by one of Chaminda Jayawardena’s personal incidents, the blood donation camp was first held in 2008 with 150 donors participating at the estate.

With the great assistance and supervision by the founder Mr. Dayapala Jayawardena and with the participation of various tea-loving personnel as well as estate employees at the firm, this gathering has collected more than 6500 pints of blood throughout the past 12 years.

The CUH Charity Foundation was formed by Mr. Chaminda Jayawardena, Mr. Harris Uddika Mahadiulwewa, Utako Yamada and Kosala Samarajiwa at the Lumbini Tea Valley in the year 2016, with the hope of funding, enhancing and bringing many more charity activities for the tea community including this generous event by gathering the tea-loving personnel under one roof.

With more than 800 participants this year, the organizers managed to donate blood for innocent children this year.

Premium Tea Driving Sales in UK Coffee Shops

Following Portuguese princess Catherine’s introduction of tea to UK, it eventually became the nation’s favorite and the national beverage. But coffee industry has done well to catch on the go / out of home market by initiating various kinds of coffee shops at almost every corner in the country. As I wrote to FoodBev Media in 2016, tea industry is always behind coffee industry when it comes to innovation and distribution strategy. Anyway, coffee shops can’t survive with out tea. As World Coffee Portal had reported based on their annual analysis of the UK’s opportune yet challenging out-of-home tea segment, estimates 3.6 million hot tea beverages are served across the UK’s specialized coffee shops every week, comprising 4.4% of the average UK coffee shop sales mix.

Allegra reveals tea segment revenues of £302m in 2018, an annual increase of 11.1%, and predicts UK out-of-home tea sales will reach £329m for the year 2019, representing annual growth of 8.9%.

Allegra Founder and CEO Jeffrey Young said:
“Tea is yet another category of the UK hospitality that is seeing a shift toward premiumisation. Premium teas provide further opportunities for foodservice operators to increase average spend and increase the breadth of their customer base. However, they to need to communicate value-add by inspiring and educating customers on the true benefits of premium tea.”

Premium teas could reverse poor value perceptions

While UK industry leaders are hopeful in their outlook for out-of-home tea sales, 37% of tea drinkers surveyed perceive out-of-home tea as poor value-for-money. So Cafe owner’s need to think twice whether they still rely on baristas to make a good cup of tea. Tea master is the ideal person to do that.

Introduction of premium loose-leaf teas can be an effective strategy to generate value-driven narratives around provenance, preparation and appreciation. This approach could also catalyse interest from the 31% of UK consumers surveyed who preference loose-leaf tea over regular tea bags.  

Further demonstrating the growing importance of loose-leaf tea, major UK coffee chains including Coffee No 1, Benugo, and Boston Tea Party have responded to the market trend towards tea premiumization with a range of loose-leaf offerings.

Among UK tea drinkers surveyed 21% purchased one of either a green, herbal or fruit tea variety on their last café visit.

Consumers taking more tea at independent cafés

Among tea drinkers surveyed, 42% are more likely to favour tea purchased at independent coffee shops versus branded chains (22%), with a quarter making their last out-of-home tea bought at an independent.

Reading the tea leaves

Sixty-one percent of UK industry leaders surveyed explain the short-term sales prospects for out-of-home tea as positive, a 6% decline on the last year. With over 80% of UK consumers anticipating no change in the frequency of their out-of-home tea consumption over the next 12 months, operators must focus on innovation to challenge tea menu indifference. Sixty-one percent of consumers surveyed indicate better quality beverages would encourage them to drink more tea out-of-home, while an increased menu range would compel 40% to do so.

Sri lanka Tea Board and Myung Won Cultural Foundation Signed A MOU

Ceylon Tea coming from the resplendent island nation, Sri Lanka is recognized for her well balanced tasting profile by tea connoisseurs all over the globe. Sri Lanka Tea Board (SLTB) is the government body which is responsible for international promotion of Pure Ceylon Tea. I reported about the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between Sri Lanka Tea Board and Lotte group of company in Korea on 16th of August. This news is about another MOU signed by tea board of Sri Lanka with Myung Won Cultural Foundation at the Myung Won World Tea Expo in Seoul, South Korea. Chairman of the Lanka Tea Board Mr Lucille Wijewardena signed the agreement with the Chairperson of the Myung Won Cultural Foundation Ms Kim Euijung.

The Myung Won Cultural Foundation carries on the legacy of the pioneer of Korean tea, Myung Won Kim Mi Hee. The foundation is recognized as the head family of the Korean traditional tea ceremony. So this MOU will certainly assist Ceylon tea to be more popular in the Republic of South Korea !

In Western Europe there are very few tea preferred nations like England, Ireland etc. Netherlands is mainly a coffee drinking nation, but there are so many tea lovers in this wonderful nation. Dutch health council has also recommended tea for a healthier life. Even Dutch students are served tea during their lunch break. The founding legend Jan van Rees initiated a tea trading company in Zwolle, going door to door on horse and cart or by bicycle, selling tea in packs of 100- 250 grams. The company has been building its global network since 1950. In 2019 the group, headquartered in Rotterdam, has got a worldwide network of 12 international offices in tea growing countries, supplying tea to both private and public sectors, regardless of the country of origin. The packages of 250 grams have been replaced by bulk packing and shipments per container. In 2018 the market leader traded 75,000 tons of tea.

Even though North America is dominated by coffee, tea is emerging thanks to health and wellness trend specially among younger generation. Hawaii is known for her tea for few decades, but the passion of tea growing has already spread to USA mainland as well. Charleston tea plantation in South Carolina is the best example comes to my mind. Since USA is the No 1 viewer of “Tea with Nipun” website with 2809 users so far, I decided to bring more information on “The United States League of Tea Growers” (USLTG) for USA tea enthusiasts and of course specially for those who wish to grow tea in the US mainland.

Tea Board Signed A MOU to Own www.ceylontea.com

Ceylon Tea coming from the resplendent island nation, Sri Lanka is recognized for her well balanced tasting profile by tea connoisseurs all over the globe. Sri Lanka Tea Board (SLTB) is the government body which is responsible for international promotion of Pure Ceylon Tea. On 10th Aug, I reported about the Korean tea importers meeting with Sri Lanka tea board chairman. Further to that, as Sri Lanka tea board had reported, SLTB chairman & Lotte chairman signed a MoU to hand over the domain name www.ceylontea.com to SLTB at lotte Head Office Seoul, South Korea on 09th August 2019 at no cost. This MoU is an important milestone which the SLTB achieved recently prior to this domain name was fully owned by the multinational giant Lotte Group of companies in South Korea.

The financial value of a vital domain such as this is immeasurable in today’s business atmosphere and also for mother Sri Lanka famous who owns the National Brand “Ceylon Tea”. These 2 products have been developed in response to BevCanna’s recent North America-wide consumer study, which focused on product and consumption preferences within the cannabis-infused beverage sector.

As Emma Andrews, chief commercialization officer at BevCanna mentioned “Iced tea was among the top five performing concepts, among 25 product concepts tested,”

Emma added further “We are also choosing to launch this brand with a balanced THC and CBD profile (1:1 ratio), in order to provide consumers with a mild, yet effective cannabis experience.”

Grüv Beverages is going to be one of the first brands launched by BevCanna in the US. In Canada, the drinks will go on sale following the legalization of cannabis-infused products in October 2019.

BevCanna will commercialize a 355ml ready-to-drink beverage, with 5mg of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and 5mg of Cannabidiol (CBD) infused in an alkaline spring water base.
