Lipton and Red Label Initiates A Factory in Qatar

Tea is the most consumed beverage in the world after water. So this popular beverage is a part of many people’s daily routing. Tea mass market is dominated by large players like Unilever (Lipton / Red Label), Tata (Tetley), Twinings, Sara Lee etc. Most of these brands have already got plants at Dubai Multi Commodity Center (DMCC). Now, Unilever owns a factory in Qatar to pack it’s most popular tea brands namely Lipton and Red Label.

As “I Love Qatar” had reported, since more global companies are showing an interest to make their presence in the country because Qatar offers businesses an opportunity to invest in a dynamic and potentially rewarding environment. By making this statement true, global mass market tea brands Lipton and Brooke Bond Red Label inaugurated their journey in Qatar on 28th April at the Industrial Area in the presence of Minister of Commerce and Industry H E Ali bin Ahmed Al-Kuwari.

“The opening of the plant is one of the fruits of the State of Qatar’s ongoing efforts to achieve partnership with the private sector and support them by all means,” Qatar’s Minister of Commerce and Industry HE Ali bin Ahmed al-Kuwari said in a press statement, as reported by the Gulf Times. 

“This is also to encourage them to contribute in supporting the national economy and achieve value addition, in addition to contributing to the achievement of self-sufficiency in many sectors, including the food products sector in line with National Vision 2030,” the Minister added.

It is learned that Lipton and Red Label brand built an “a kind of ecosystem over the years, which increases other businesses as well”. The factory will boost tea production from 1,200 to 2,000 tonnes in its first year of operation. Tea used by the plant come from four countries: Sri Lanka, Kenya, India, and Turkey. This is the first tea packaging plant of Lipton and Red Label brands in Qatar and it will stimulate and assist the nation’s efforts to achieve self-sufficiency.

Sir Thomas Lipton, the founder of Lipton brand first initiated tea manufacture at Dambetanna tea factory in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) in 1890. Lipton’s seat situated at the highest peak on this tea estate is one of the most attractive tourist destination in Sri Lanka.

Manik Jayakumar was born in Sri Lanka where finest quality Ceylon Teas are grown. His father is a physician, and he has got six brothers. His parents arranged for him to attend a fine public school that afforded men of color a better footing in a society about to be viciously torn. He graduated back in 1963 and then played Club Rugby & Internationals for a decade after passing out from school including matches with the world famous All Blacks (New Zealand) and London Welsh rugby teams.

As Dan Bolton had reported, He was appointed coordinating officer in charge of the plantation district of Nuwraeliya by the President of Sri Lanka and held this position until he migrated in 1989.

This most unexpected recognition of the small part I have played while working in the industry that I love is beyond anything I have ever sought. So it really worth for young tea entrepreneurs to follow Mr. Jayakumar as a role model, isn’t it ? I am not sure how many Sri Lakans are aware of his wonderful achievement. But with no doubt Mr. Jayakumar has become an unsung hero for Sri Lanka.

Black, Oolong, Green and White Tea: What’s the Difference? (video)

Tea is the second most popular beverage in the world after water. All Black, Oolong, Green and White Teas are coming from the same plant. So what makes those tea types different even though all of them are descending from the same source ? By providing an answer, American Chemistry Society (https://www.acs.org/content/acs/en.html) has released a video in order to educate consumers.

Tea is a rich source of antioxidants which are polyphenols in nature. Catechins are the main form of poly-phenols present in tea green leaves. During Black tea processing, these catechins are converted naturally in to theaflavins (A Poly-phenol) and a part of theaflavins (A Poly-phenol) are further oxidized in to Thearubigins. Poly-phenol oxidase (PPO) is the enzyme responsible for this reaction. This reaction initiates once the leaf is twisted or broken at rolling process. You must have observed the colour change of apple (In to a brown colour) once it cuts in to pieces and keep for a while. Yes, this is the same reaction.

During Green Tea manufacture, the action of PPO is restricted by denaturing the enzyme with heat. Oolong tea is partially oxidized. White teas like Silver tips are manufactured with apical terminal bud. There is hardly any rolling for white tea. So no fermentation occurs. The white colour comes from the pubescence present under the leaf.

Most important thing is nothing added artificially during any of above tea manufacture. Therefore no matter whether it’s Black, Oolong, Green or White tea. Enjoy your humble cuppa. Cheers !
