Tea Cocktail Craze Hits Sydney

Tea is getting more and more popular in Australia even though Coffee has been recognized as the most popular beverage in the nation. Comparatively larger Asian community, climatic variation and diverse cultures have created so many tea preferences with in the nation. In an era when tea retail concept is getting out dated, it’s high time for marketers to focus more on service sector. Tea cocktail is a great way to increase the popularity of tea and a wise strategy to attract younger generation. Tea has long been a refreshing time out from a hectic day, but now many of Sydney’s leading bars and restaurants have taken the simple tea and given it a real twist.

 

 

Tea cocktail lists across town are mixing up brews that young Australians want to drink well into the night. Tea-tinis, gin mixed with Earl Grey or a dash of white rum in your matcha are few examples.

Applejack Hospitality’s group bar manager Craig Kerrison oversees The Botanist Kirribilli, The Butler at Potts Point, Darlinghurst’s Della Hyde, Endeavour Tap Rooms and SoCal Neutral Bay.

He says the versatility of tea is even giving longstanding cocktail royalty, the espresso martini a run for its money.

“Younger people — especially the health-conscious — care about what they put into their bodies. If they see ingredients that are medicinal, herbaceous or floral, they select that,” Kerrison tells BW Magazine.

“It makes them feel a bit better about themselves. A cocktail with ginger tea in it is better for you than a lot of the other options.”

His claims are backed by research. Fitness loving Australians are becoming more aware about what they put in their bodies and are increasingly choosing to drink less and better-quality alcohol, according to Roy Morgan research.

This applies to men and women, with cocktails such as the frosé (frozen rosé) transcending gender barriers.The popularity of cocktails has also been heralded by a decline in beer drinking in favour of spirits.

Between 2003 and 2016, beer consumption declined by more than 4 per cent, while consumption of spirits increased by almost 25 per cent, data from the Australia Bureau of Statistics showed. As a bartender, Kerrison is excited by the possibilities of tea, especially when there is no set recipe for making a tea cocktail.

“Some of the best bars in the world use tea in their drinks … it’s being used more expansively.” In Kerrison’s experience, the average tea cocktail costs drinkers $18 a glass but the price varies based on the alcohol used.

Naturopath and herbalist Chalimah Jeanne of the Organic Merchant capitalised on this trend by mixing her organic tea blends into cocktails, serving them in gift boxes and handing out monthly “tea subscription boxes” to a loyal fanbase of twenty-somethings.

 

 

Gregor Pritzlass looks after Organic Merchant’s marketing and says the company has transformed itself to appeal to a younger market.

“In the beginning it was really health-focused but then we realised that we had to be more palatable. Not everyone is going want an immunity tea,” he says.

“With the iced teas and cocktails we moved into the younger crowd who have a healthy lifestyle and are enthusiastic.”

The Sydney Tea Festival this year debuted Australia’s first tea wine and drinks such as LongLeaf, a mix of Ceylon tea with organic vodka, are lining the shelves of bottle shops across the country. The proof is also in the numbers.

In 2015 the Sydney Tea Festival had 5000 visitors and 43 stallholders. Last year, visitors boomed to more than 6300 and the number of stalls almost doubled to 80.

The Sunderlands own two funky tea stores called T Totaler — one a takeaway shop in The Galleries in the CBD, the other a sit-down store at Newtown.

When their team began serving tea lattes and cold-drip teas, the couple hoped the younger generation would warm to their offerings.

T-Totaler’s fairy floss-covered tea latte was an Instagram sensation, so too are its more recent ice-teas, which shimmer with gold dust in elegant glass bottles. The success has propelled the pair to work towards transforming their Newtown site into a fully-fledged bar specialising in dumplings and tea cocktails.

“When we started we wanted to change the perception around tea and we have kept that philosophy ever since. We just wanted to make it more fun,” Amber Sunderland says.

It takes her a few months to come up with each new invention but if social media is an indicator, she knows what her audience wants.

Among her latest experiments is “sparkling tea” — a lightly carbonated tea for those who want a chilled drink without the alcohol.

It’s served in a champagne glass, with social media in mind.

“It’s not just about the taste, it’s the look, and it’s the smell. There’s a lot that goes into a drink now.”

Great Technique To Assure Tea Transparency

A Singapore-founded multi-brand marketplace for all things tea-related launches this month, promising plant-to-cup traceability for the region’s most popular beverage. Teapasar will offer access to hundreds of uniquely identified teas, including rare exclusive blends, giving the community a peace of mind thanks to its fingerprinting technology and machine-learning predictions. Its co-founder Alan Lai hopes it will become “the sanctuary for all tea lovers and merchants”.

One of the biggest features of Teapasar (https://teapasar.com/ )is its ability to protect consumers and retailers from tea fraud, which is becoming increasingly rampant in markets like Vietnam (where cheap teas are being passed off as oolongs) and China, (where police recently seized eight tonnes of fake Puer). There are also instances of Indian authorities discovering teas adulterated with artificial colourants considered carcinogenic.

The technology behind the tea fingerprinting was developed in collaboration with the National University of Singaporeʼs (NUS) Food Science and Technology Programme under the Faculty of Science, and the Agency for Science, Technology and Research’s (A*Star) BioTransformation Innovation Platform (BioTrans). Born from pure passion for the tea industry, it aims to break down traditional barriers between merchants and drinkers from different corners of the globe by being direct-from-farm and multi-brand.

All teas tested by Teapasar come with a unique ID called ProfilePrint. NUS food scientists successfully established the initial metabolomic fingerprinting model with teapasar for straight teas, and A*Star validated the model with both the straight and blended teas and established a machine-learning taste-prediction model. This will be further studied using the established protocol for fraud prevention with a larger sample size, and to develop even cheaper and faster fingerprinting technology.

Chemical fingerprint for every tea variety

Professor Zhou Weibiao, director of the Food Science and Technology Programme, NUS Faculty of Science, said that the university aims, with Teapasar, to develop a fast and reliable tool to provide a unique chemical fingerprint for every tea variety, which can be used to authenticate the original source of teas and help verify product labels.

ProfilePrint can be used to identify the origin, terroir, cultivar and harvest date by random testing of teas listed on Teapasar, and also allows the machine-learning prediction of taste profiles of each tea based on its organic composition. A Taste Map is developed for each tea, indicating levels in eight areas: sweetness, umami, richness, saltiness, sourness, astringency, bitterness and astringent aftertaste. Apart from fraud detection, these taste profiles between individual preferences and teas in the database can be matched so buyers are better informed before making a purchase online without tasting it.

Teapasar is described as “a treasure trove of quality and authenticated teas, with over 300 products from 35 merchants available at launch, including home-grown and international tea brands as well as rare direct-from-plantation teas”.

To help with tea selection, consumers are able to create their own Taste Map marking personal preferences – Teapasar will then recommend products from the marketplace’s comprehensive and ever-growing database.

With Teapasar’s omnichannel model, plantations and merchants are able to connect directly with tea aficionados; and consumers get to curate their favourite teas and interact with brands.

Since it’s discovery by the Chinese emperor Shen Nong, tea drink was refreshing the man kind for generations. This 5000 year old drink eventually became the most popular beverage in the world after water. Here I am referring to Black, Green, Oolong, White etc teas manufactured from the plant Camellia sinensis. Tisanes (Herbal infusions ) such as Chamomile, Rooibos, Yerba mate etc are out from the equation.

Have you ever thought reasons or the secret behind the success story of this noble drink ? I my opinion there are quite a few. As we all know tea refreshes us. Not only the body, but also our souls.

Tea is the only popular beverage which provides stimulation and relaxation at the same time. Alkaloids like caffeine present in tea stimulates our body while L-theanine provides a calming effect.

Anti-oxidants present in this beverage is known to reduce the effect of cardio vascular diseases, diabetes, cancers and many others. Scientists have also claimed that antioxidants has got the ability to reduce the aging process (Reference 1).

It also contains 0 calories when consuming without any additives like milk and sugar. Tea can also be consumed in both hot and cold forms.

Tea grown in Turkey exported to 96 countries

Tea is a way of life in Turkey and this wonderful tea loving nation has got the highest per capita tea consumption in  the world which is around 7 pounds per person per year. Turkish tea exports from January to August surpassed $5.715 million in the first eight months of 2018, with Germany being the top importer, according to data obtained by Eastern Black Sea Exporters Association (DKIB).The data showed that 439 tons of tea has been exported to 96 countries worldwide, with Germany being the top buyer with 128 tons, bringing $770,000 of profit.

More than $633,000 worth of sales have been made to North Cyprus, the second top buyer of Turkish tea, and $576,000 worth of sales have been to the United States within eight months, according to the compiled data.

Şaban Turgut, assistant chairman of DKIB, said that Turkish tea has been the most significant agricultural product among Turkey’s exports as it brings the most profit.

Turgut also said that they are especially pleased with the amount of exports made and are making developments in achieving worldwide publicity for the product.

The high demand for Turkish tea, including white tea, stems from the increase in tourism that the country’s been having, Turgut said.

“Due to the increase in Arab tourists in the Black Sea region, there has been a significant demand for tea from Middle Eastern countries,” he said. Further developments in the variety of teas will also be investigated, he added.There has been an increase in the number of eating and drinking festivals in Turkey recently. Tea, which is the most important part of Turkish daily life, has been considered an inextricable part of Turkish drinking culture for centuries.

The Ottomans were introduced to tea about 140 years ago. During the reign of Abdülhamid II, tea was planted on all sides of the empire from Bursa to Aleppo and from Aydın to Erzurum, but it did not hold due to the unfavorable climate in most cities. However, it was soon understood that the Black Sea region was more suitable to grow this plant, and in 1947 the very first tea factory in Turkey was established in Rize — Turkey’s tea-making capital.

Turkish consumers consume tea in extreme hot form which has led to some oral cancers among drinkers. Also they add quite a lot of sugar in to their tea. But overall Turkish people are so passionate on tea and serving tea is an important feature of kind Turkish hospitality.

Tea was not among the $200 billion in Chinese imports subject to a 10% US tariff announced. In response, China canceled scheduled trade talks. The escalation in the trade war between the two countries added to tariffs on $50 billion in goods imposed this summer. Chinese authorities responded with a $60 billion counter punch in retaliation.

Tea Association of the USA president Peter Goggi says “tariffs on tea are highly unlikely.”

“The tea growing industry in the US is not yet large enough to warrant tariff protection,” Goggi explains. “While progress has been made and tea is being grown around the US, most of the production sites in the U.S. are small and artisanal in nature and are not in any position to replace the volume of Chinese tea in our markets.”

“The tea industry is vanishingly small by the standards of both countries’ economies and thus very little impact could be produced by including tea in the tariff scheme, and so we hope that tea may escape the notice of the competing interests due to its diminutive stature on the economic stage,” says Aaron Vick, senior tea buyer at the The G.S. Haly Co., in Redwood City, Calif.

The US maintains that China is expanding its economy unfairly by forcing US companies to hand over technology to gain access to the Chinese market. Unless China concedes, US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on all Chinese imports, to offset a trade deficit which grew to $336 billion in 2017.“

Any tariff imposed on Chinese tea would not be protective, but rather, a transparently punitive attack on a culturally iconic product that embodies Chinese national pride,” said Vick.

Auction tea prices in Sri Lanka marginally up in Sep 2018

Auction average price for the month of September 2018 totaled Rs.537.77 compared to Rs.534.02 of August 2018 showing a marginal increase of Rs.03.75 month on month, a new report said. “However in comparison to September 2017 auction average price of Rs.635.40 it shows a substantial decrease of Rs.97.63,” Forbes & Walker Tea Brokers (http://web.forbestea.com/) said in their latest report.

When analyzing the respective elevation averages for the month of September 2018; High Growns totalling price Rs.572.61 has recorded a decline of Rs.08.83 vis-à-vis 571.44 of August 2018. When compared to September 2017 a decrease of Rs.53.79 is evident YOY.

Mediums averaging Rs.478.68 has recorded a marginal increase of Rs.01.84 vis-à-vis Rs.476.84 of August 2018. When compared to September 2017 average price of 565.49 however shows a significant decrease of Rs.86.81.

Meanwhile Low Growns totalling Rs.542.66 have recorded an increase of Rs.06.36 vis-à-vis Rs.536.30 of August 2018. Similarly, when compared to Rs.653.19 of September 2017, shows a significant decrease of Rs.97.63 YOY.

When analysing the January – September 2018 cumulative average of Rs.581.95 a decrease of Rs.31.67 is recorded vis-à-vis Rs.613.62 of January-September 2017.

This week’s total Auction offerings declined to 5.35M/kgs. There was good demand all round.

Ex-Estate offerings totalled 0.2M/kgs. Quality of teas from the Western District showed fair improvement, whilst teas from the Eastern sector showed no significant change. There was good demand, particularly for the better teas which appreciated fairly significantly in value. Best Western BOP/BOPF gained Rs. 20-30/- per kg and more following special inquiry. In the Below Best category, a selection of improved BOP/BOPF appreciated Rs. 10-20/- per kg and Rs. 20-30/- per kg respectively. Others, together with teas at the lower end were firm and tended dearer. Nuwara Eliyas were disappointing, whilst Udapussellawas were irregular following quality. Uva seasonal teas were mostly unsaleable, whilst coloury BOP’s gained Rs. 10-20/- per kg following special inquiry. Corresponding BOPF was firm and Rs. 10/- per kg dearer. CTC teas were mostly firm to dearer, particularly for the clean leaf teas.

Low Growns totalled 2.6M/kgs in the Leafy/Tippy catalogues. There was good demand this week. In the Leafy catalogue, better BOP1/OP1’s were generally firm to irregularly dearer whilst others were lower following quality. A few select best OP/OPA’s maintained whilst others were generally easier to previous. At the lower end however cleaner types were fully firm to dearer. PEK/PEK1’s were generally firm to dearer with the exception of a few high priced teas which were barely steady. In the Tippy catalogue, FBOP’s were fully firm to selectively dearer whilst FF1’s gained Rs.10-15/- per kg and more for the cleaner below best types. At the lower end too there was better demand and prices gained particularly for the clean leaf sorts. In the Premium catalogue, there was good demand all around and prices were dearer to last with a selection of below best types gaining substantially. There was good demand from shippers to CIS, Turkey, Dubai, Iraq, Libya and Saudi Arabia this week.

NATIONAL TEA SALE AVERAGES – SEPTEMBER 2018

National average stable after declining for 7 consecutive months this year.

Auction average for the month of September 2018 totalled Rs.537.77 vis-à-vis Rs.534.02 of August 2018 showing a marginal increase of Rs.03.75 month on month. However In comparison to September 2017 average of Rs.635.40 it shows a substantial decrease of Rs.97.63.

When analysing the respective elevational averages for the month of September 2018;

High Growns totalling Rs.572.61 has recorded a decline of Rs.08.83 vis-à-vis 571.44 of August 2018. When compared to September 2017 a decrease of Rs.53.79 is evident YOY.

Mediums averaging Rs.478.68 has recorded a marginal increase of Rs.01.84 vis-à-vis Rs.476.84 of August 2018. When compared to September 2017 average of 565.49 however shows a significant decrease of Rs.86.81.

Meanwhile Low Growns totalling Rs.542.66 have recorded an increase of Rs.06.36 vis-à-vis Rs.536.30 of August 2018. Similarly, when compared to Rs.653.19 of September 2017, shows a significant decrease of Rs.97.63 YOY.

When analysing the January – September 2018 cumulative average of Rs.581.95 a decrease of Rs.31.67 is recorded vis-à-vis Rs.613.62 of January-September 2017.

High Growns for the period January-September 2018 of Rs.570.19 has shown a decrease of Rs.18.74 vis-à-vis Rs.588.93 of January-September 2017. Mediums too averaging Rs.521.62 have shown a decrease of Rs.40.51 vis-à-vis Rs.562.13 of January-September 2017. Meanwhile Low Growns totalling Rs.601.02 for January-September 2018 has shown a decline of Rs.31.67 vis-à-vis Rs.613.62 of January-September 2017.

Both the month and cumulative averages continues to show a greater decrease in USD terms compared to the corresponding period of 2017 with Sri Lankan Rupee depreciating sharply particularly in the month of September.

Ozone Friendly Pure Ceylon Tea

Pure Ceylon tea is one of the most renowned generic tea brands which has got more than 150 years of history. Due to it’s well balanced tasting profile and ethical back-ground, Ceylon tea has been able to penetrate to each and every corn in the world during this short period of time. Ozone friendly status for pure Ceylon tea is one of the greatest achievements in the recent past.

Ozone is a gas, a special type of oxygen molecule made up of three atoms instead of two. The ozone layer, high up in Earth’s atmosphere, contains large amounts of this gas, which acts as a barrier to ultraviolet (UV) light and other forms of high-energy radiation reaching Earth’s surface from the Sun and elsewhere.

Alarmed by warnings from the scientists, the world’s nations met in Montreal, Canada in 1987 to decide upon action to protect this layer. Out of this meeting came the Montreal Protocol, signed by 191 countries including Sri Lanka. Under the protocol, methyl bromide use by the Sri Lankan tea industry was progressively reduced, then done away with altogether. As a result of such prompt and effective action by the tea industry and others, Sri Lanka was acclaimed a ‘leader in ozone-layer protection’, receiving the Montreal Protocol Implementers Award in 2007.

All tea grown in Sri Lanka is now one hundred percent ozone-friendly. This is a distinction of which no other tea-producing nation can boast. Plans are now being drawn up to impose a total ban on methyl bromide use in applications like export packaging and shipping. As of May 2011, all Ceylon Tea is entitled to bear the new ‘Ozone Friendly Pure Ceylon Tea’ logo, certifying that it has been produced without the use of any ozone-depleting substances.

Ceylon Tea cultivated and manufactured in the territory of Sri Lanka without the use of Methyl Bromide (MeBr) or any other Ozone Depletion Substances is the world’s first to achieve the “Ozone Friendly Tea” recognition under the Montréal Protocol Treaty and is registered as a Certification Mark by Sri Lanka Tea Board. MeBr is used as a nematicide. This releases Bromine gas which harms the layer. This chemical has been banned to use for commercial tea cultivation in Sri Lanka. Few years back it was allowed to use for soil fumigation at tea nurseries. In the later part of 2010, I had the opportunity practice this soil fumigation activity at Glen Alpin estate, Uva region, Sri Lanka as a part of my creeper training. But currently, MeBr is not allowed for any field activity.

Mental wounds can be healed with tea beverage

Tea is a beverage which has got more than 5000 years of history. Since it’s discover by the Chinese emperor Shen Nong, this wonderful beverage has become the most popular beverage after water. As a beverage tea has got many specific features responsible for her great popularity all over the world. Let’s discuss those feature with another post. She would recount stories of her life in Derry, and we would lose ourselves discussing faith, race and violence. Her perspective was different from that of everyone else I knew, and even though we are of different generations and from different backgrounds, there was mutual respect and common ground.

Things are a lot better now, but I still regularly pop over to Carson’s for a brew. Whether it’s breakfast, afternoon or dinnertime, I love to be curled up on the sofa with her and a cuppa. It’s where I feel most safe”.

Above is regarding mental wounds. Then what about physical wounds. Tea is a beverage which is a rich source of valuable antioxidants. Antioxidants present in tea controls bad odors coming out of wounds by minimizing oxidation.
